Rock Hill Herald Winter Sports’ Athletes of the Week

Brenden Alexander, Lancaster Wrestling: The Bruins’ junior won the Region III, 4A title at 152 pounds at Indian Land, Jan. 28.

Alexander is 32-4 overall this season.

Kali Carter, Rock Hill Basketball: The 6-foot-1 senior scored nine points, seven rebounds, three steals and two blocks in a 54-49 win at Clover, Jan. 24.

Carter also scored 14 points, grabbed eight rebounds and one block in a 53-49 win over Spring Valley, Jan. 27.

Carter is averaging 6.5 points and 4.7 rebounds per game for Rock Hill (15-4) this season.

Jada Chambliss, Fort Mill Girls’ Basketball: The 5-foot-7 freshman point guard scored 16 points, grabbed eight rebounds, had two blocks and one assist in a 49-42 win at Nation Ford, Jan. 24.

Chambliss also had 14 points, seven rebounds, one block and one assist in 46-40 loss to Blythewood, Jan. 27.

Fort Mill is 8-14 overall this season.

Makailah Davis, Catawba Ridge Girls’ Basketball: The 5-foot-5 sophomore scored 15 points, had five assists, three steals and two rebounds in a 44-37 win at Northwestern, Jan. 24.

Davis also exploded for 29 points in a 69-60 victory over South Pointe, Jan. 27.

Davis is averaging 16 points, four rebounds, two assists and three steals per game for Catawba Ridge (16-4) this season.

Corey Dye, Northwestern Wrestling: The Trojans’ junior went 5-0 this week with all bonus point wins including a pin to clinch a 35-30 win over Catawba Ridge, which earned Northwestern the Region III 4A title, Jan. 26.

Dye, who is 30-4 overall this season, also earned co-Region III, 4A wrestler of the year for his efforts.

Northwestern is 18-5 this season.

Darby Grigg, Northwestern Girls’ Basketball: The 5-foot-7 senior scored 13 points and grabbed four steals in a 44-37 loss to Catawba Ridge, Jan. 24.

Grigg followed that up with 28 points, including her 1,000th career points, to with five steals and two blocks to lead Northwestern to a 46-35 win over Lancaster, Jan. 27.

Grigg is averaging 19 points, four rebounds and four steals per game for Northwestern (6-12) this season.

Tim Hall, Westminster Catawba Basketball: The 6-foot-7 senior scored 33 points, grabbed 15 rebounds to go with six blocks and two steals in a 62-56 win over Gaston Day, Jan. 24.

Hall recorded his 2000th career points and 1,000 career rebound in the Gaston Day victory.

Hall followed that up by recording his 12th straight double-double with 30 points and 13 rebounds in a 71-68 loss at Gaston Christian, Jan. 27.

Westminster Catawba is 14-13 overall this season.

Jaylon Hoover, Clover Basketball: The 6-foot-1 junior scored 10 points and had three rebounds in a 54-49 loss to Rock Hill, Jan. 24.

Hoover also scored 28 points to go with three rebounds and two steals in a 70-67 victory at Nation Ford, Jan. 27.

Hoover is averaging 12 points, two rebounds, two assists and one steal per game for Clover (10-12) this season.

Imani Sterling, Rock Hill Girls’ Basketball: The 5-foot-10 sophomore averaged 6.1 points and 11.1 rebounds this week as Rock Hill split games with Clover and Spring Valley.

Rock Hill (14-6) won 45-30 at Clover, Jan. 24, before losing 47-44 to Spring Valley, Jan. 27.

Sterling is averaging 3.3 points, 5.7 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game this season.

Gavin Wilson, York Wrestling: The Cougars’ junior pinned each of his opponents and didn’t allow a point as he won the 145-pound, Region III, 4A title at 145 pounds at Indian Land, Jan.28.

Wilson, who is 29-2 overall this season, was named co-Region III, 4A wrestler of the year for his efforts.
