Rock Hill Herald Winter Sports’ Athletes of the Week Nominees
Ni’Yonna Asbelle, Andrew Jackson Girls’ Basketball: The 5-foot-10 freshman scored 24 points, grabbed 12 rebounds, three assists and six steals in a 79-52 win over Ridgeland/Hardeeville in the first round of the 2A state playoffs, Feb. 15.
Asbelle scored 14 points, had eight rebounds, two assists and three steals in a 40-38 win over Oceanside Collegiate Academy, Feb. 17.
Asbelle is averaging 14.8 points, 6.1 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 3.2 steals per game for an Andrew Jackson team (21-5) that has won 16 straight games this season.
Ke’Mari Boyd, Rock Hill Basketball: The 5-foot-9 senior exploded for 31 points, eight rebounds, four assists, four steals and two blocks in a 66-57 win over Spartanburg in the first round of the 5A state playoffs, Feb. 16.
Rock Hill’s season (18-8) ended in an 81-49, second round loss at Lexington, Feb. 18.
Tydriez “Dre” Coleman, Great Falls Basketball: The 6-foot-8 senior scored 14 points in an 85-43 win over Ware Sholes in the first round of the 1A state playoffs, Feb. 16.
Coleman also posted a double-double with 27 points and 10 rebounds in a 70-58 victory over High Point Academy, Feb. 18.
Coleman was also named Region III, 1A defensive player of the year and to the 1A all-state team this week.
Great Falls (22-5) has won 16 straight games this season.
Corey Dye, Jr., Northwestern Wrestling: The Trojans’ junior won the 5A Upper State Championship at 113 pounds at Hillcrest High, Feb. 18.
Dye is 34-5 overall this season.
Grant Lovette, Catawba Ridge Basketball: The 6-foot-2 senior scored 21 points to lead Catawba Ridge to 64-55 win over Riverside in the first round of the 4A state playoffs, Feb. 15.
The victory was the Catawba Ridge boys’ basketball team’s first ever playoff win.
Lovette followed that up with 20 points, 13 rebounds, five assists and two blocks in a 56-49, second round win at North Augusta, Feb. 17.
Lovette is averaging 14.6 points, 8.3 rebounds and three assists for a Catawba Ridge team (24-4) that has now won nine straight games this season.
A.J. Washington, Fort Mill Basketball: The 6-foot-3 freshman scored 18 points, had five rebounds, one assist and one steal in a 57-55 win over Spring Valley in the first round of the 5A state playoffs, Feb. 16.
Washington also scored 17 points to go with three rebounds and one assist in a 59-40 win over Hillcrest in the second round of the 5A playoffs.
Washington is averaging 10 points, four rebounds, one assist and one steal for a Fort Mill team (17-10) that has won 10 straight games.
Ghaleb Wilson, Andrew Jackson Basketball: The 6-foot-2 junior scored 31 points in an 88-25 win over Edisto in the first round of the 2A state playoffs, Feb. 16.
Wilson followed that up with 30 more points in a 79-52 win over Andrews in the second round, Feb. 18.
Wilson is averaging 18.6 points and 5.5 rebounds for an Andrew Jackson team (21-3) that has won 18 straight games.
