More big games lie ahead; Rock Hill region has a rich legacy of winning state titles
One hundred years of winning high school state championships is no easy feat. But it gives you plenty to brag about.
Herald reporter John Marks did some digging over the summer and put together a stunning list of state championships won in York, Lancaster and Chester Counties. The first one came in 1922.
John probed an array of records and sports. One thing is clear. Football dominates the landscape -- by a wide margin.
And here we are, starting a new high school football season.
We didn’t get the big win we sought Saturday night when Northwestern played Providence. Still,it’s a good time to celebrate this region’s legacy of winning?
If you’re reading this at heraldonline.com, you see we’ve made a big deal out of the Rock Hill region’s winning tradition. You see a dynamic chart that shows all the sports that have captured state titles. It’s an impressive compilation.
John scoured records from public and private schools, and searched schools from the segregation era. We’re still not sure we have them all, but that’s not due to lack of effort. If you know of a title we may have missed, and can give us documentation, we’ll add it to our list. This compilation will remain part of our online publication.
There’s also a fun quiz to test your knowledge. I’ve worked in this region almost eight years, I also have family ties here. I’ll simply say my results weren’t great. And I consider myself an avid high school sports fan.
Any place that claims the moniker “Football City USA” had better have proof. The Herald has found that proof. And that legacy goes beyond one sport and one place. It spans across York, Lancaster and Chester counties. And, it spans 100 years.
I urge you to go online and take a look. Maybe even take the quiz.
One thing, I’ll guarantee. You’ll be impressed at the 100 years of sports history that high schools in this region have amassed.
And it’ll make you ready for football season -- if you’re not already.
