Rock Hill High School football quarterback among four college commitments on signing day

Rock Hill quarterback Matthew Wilson said announcing his commitment to Appalachian State was one of the best feelings he’s ever had.

A four-year starter at Rock Hill, Wilson had a successful career as a Bearcat. While he joked he may not be ready for the snowfall that comes with a Boone winter, Wilson is eager for this next chapter for his life.

“The first day I stepped on campus for a visit, it was a no-brainer,” Wilson said. “I just felt it in my heart. It just ran through my body. This is the place that I wanted to be. This is the place I wanted to spend my four years. I’m glad that they gave me the opportunity to do it, and I’m glad that I chose to do it.”

Wilson said that he’ll enroll at App State in January and move in immediately, majoring in communications and coaching.

Three other Rock Hill athletes also announced their commitments Thursday morning in the school’s gymnasium.

From the girls’ volleyball team, outside hitter Camie Mitrovich committed to Nova Southeastern University, while middle blocker Isabelle Conradie signed to USC-Lancaster.

Mitrovich recorded 316 kills and 306 digs en route to an all-state selection for the Bearcats, while Conradie led the team with 84 total blocks.

Cole Canty, a 6-foot-4 outfielder on the Rock Hill baseball team, signed with The Citadel.

Canty said he hopes to carry the values instilled in him at Rock Hill throughout his collegiate career.

“Being at Rock Hill High has definitely helped me mature as a person a lot,” Canty said. “It helped me grow and learn through my mistakes and just try to improve upon them. I think it’s helped me a lot in all aspects of life.”

Canty still has his senior year to play for Rock Hill after helping the Bearcats to a District Finals appearance last season.
