High school basketball gameday: A guide to this weekend’s tri-county games

This weekend features some top rivalry matchups in high school basketball as the region slate heats up ahead of the state tournament next month.

(Boys) York Prep (10-6, 5-0) at No. 4 Andrew Jackson (13-3, 3-0); Jan. 18 at 8 p.m.

The battle between the last remaining regionally unbeaten Region 5-2A teams will go down between York Prep and Andrew Jackson on Thursday night. These programs have combined to win each of the past four region titles (York Prep: 2021, 2022; Andrew Jackson: 2020, 2023). Andrew Jackson entered the week as the No. 4 team in Class 2A and is led by senior Ghaleb Wilson with 17.9 points per game, while York Prep has won four of its past five.

(Girls) No. 3 Fort Mill (14-5, 0-3) at Clover (13-4, 2-0); Jan. 19 at 6:30 p.m.

Fort Mill came into region play as the No. 3 team in 5A but has since dropped three straight region games. The Yellow Jackets will look to get regain their footing when they head to face Clover Friday night. Clover comes into the game winning six of its past seven, and the Blue Eagles haven’t lost a game by more than six all season. Fort Mill hasn’t won in this matchup since 2016.

(Boys) No. 10 Indian Land (14-4, 2-0) at No. 4 Catawba Ridge (16-2, 3-0); Jan. 19 at 7:30 p.m.

Catawba Ridge will face its second-straight Top 10 opponent in 4A when Indian Land travels to face the Copperheads on Friday night. Both teams are riding sizable win streaks coming into the contest, with the Copperheads having won six straight and the Warriors four. Sophomore point guard Mike Jones leads Indian Land with 27. 1 points per game — third in the state — while Catawba Ridge is led by guard Zyan Hager with 20.1 points per game.

(Boys) South Pointe (6-12, 0-2) at Northwestern (10-9, 1-1); Jan. 19 at 7:45 p.m.

South Pointe has dropped its first two region games of the year and will look to get back in the win column when it travels to play in-town rival Northwestern on Friday night. Northwestern has won eight of the past nine matchups between these two schools.

(Boys) No. 2 Lewisville (9-1, 1-1) at Great Falls (8-3, 1-0); Jan. 19 at 8 p.m.

Rivals Lewisville and Great Falls will face off for the first time this season in their region doubleheader. Great Falls has won the region six years in a row and nine of the previous ten meetings between the two schools, but Lewisville is the No. 2 team in Class A.
