Greater Rock Hill HS football roundup: Clover, South Pointe, Lewisville among winners

Now they wait.

High school football teams from the Greater Rock Hill area made their final cases for playoff positions in their final regular-season games Friday night.

But it will be another week before we know how the playoff picture shakes out.

The S.C. High School League has added another week to the regular season, because numerous games in the western part of the state were postponed last month due to damage from Hurricane Helene. So until those games are played in the coming seven days, the playoff picture remains uncertain.

No Rock Hill-area teams are scheduled to play next weekend, and with first-round playoff byes in store for some schools, it’s possible that top seeds like Northwestern could be off for two straight weekends before postseason play.

But on the final night of the regular season locally, Clover scored a big victory, and both South Pointe and Lewisville completed perfect seasons in their region play.

Here’s a wrapup of Friday’s games:

CLOVER 34, CATAWBA RIDGE 21: The Blue Eagles raced to a 28-0 lead and romped in their Region 3 5A contest. Running back Grady Stone scored on a 6-yard pass from Aaron Shealey and on runs of 11 and 8 yards.

Catawba Ridge (7-3, 4-2), down 28-0 late in the second quarter, narrowed the gap on touchdown passes from C.J. Couch to Braysin Burgis and Darius Sutton. That made it 28-14 with 10:05 left in the third quarter.

But Clover (7-3, 4-2) pulled away. Stone broke loose for a 71-yard run, setting up his 8-yard touchdown run with 45 seconds left in the third quarter.

Catawba Ridge got a final touchdown midway in the fourth quarter on a 6-yard pass from Couch to Sutton.

According to the playoff tiebreaker rules in the region, Rock Hill will be the No. 2 seed from the conference, with Clover at No. 3 and Catawba Ridge at No. 4.

NATION FORD 27, FORT MILL 23: Carson Sanford threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to Josh Ameo with 31 seconds left, lifting Nation Ford (2-8, 1-5) over the Yellow Jackets (1-8, 0-6).

Ameo’s touchdown catch, which capped an 80-yard drive in 90 seconds, wasn’t the end of it, though. Fort Mill then drove in the remaining 31 seconds to the Nation Ford 6. On the game’s final play, Fort Mill quarterback Broden Mitcheson scrambled and was tackled at the 2.

Sanford threw two other touchdown passes to Ameo, covering 42 and 2 yards. and Patience Andrews scored on a 1-yard run.

Fort Mill scored on a 26-yard pass from Mitcheson to Tanner May, on a 6-yard run by Thomas Mabry, and on field goals of 33 and 22 yards by Noah Hardy. The second field goal followed a goal line stand by the Nation Ford defense.

SOUTH POINTE 56, RICHLAND NORTHEAST 6: The Stallions made their trip to Columbia worthwhile, logging another lopsided Region 3 4A victory. South Pointe (8-2, 6-0) took a 14-6 first-quarter lead on a touchdown run by Mason Pickett-Hicks and a pass from Cam McMillon to Jordan Collins.

The Stallions built their lead to 35-6 at the half, on a 5-yard run by McMillon, a 65-yard pass from McMillon to Jordan Collins, and a 34-yard pass from McMillon to Dailyn Duncan. On his touchdown run, McMillon carried three defenders into the end zone.

LANCASTER 34, YORK 13: Zy’Quarious Clinton threw a pair of first-half touchdown passes to R.J. Brown, leading the Bruins (4-6, 2-4) to a Region 3 4A victory and a likely playoff berth. the passes covered 13 and 14 yards and gave Lancaster a 14-0 lead midway through the second quarter.

York narrowed the gap on a 27-yard field goal by Cesar Mendoza late in the first half and a 35-yard Mendoza field goal midway in the third quarter.

But Lancaster built its lead to 26-6 on touchdown runs of 4 yards by Ti’Mar Mobley and 14 yards by Brown in the final three minutes of the quarter.

York narrowed the gap to 26-13 on a 62-yard pass from Tayshon Freeman to Jamarion McCoy, but another Clinton touchdown pass in the fourth quarter sealed it for Lancaster.

ANDREW JACKSON 49, BUFORD 7: Andrew Jackson (3-7, 3-2 Region 4 2A) sealed the No. 3 playoff berth in the region with this big victory.

Jy’Kevius Johnson also scored on a 35-yard interception return. Buford (2-8, 1-4) averted a shutout when Noah Crump connected with Hawkins Wilson on a 12-yard score early in the fourth quarter.

LEWISVILLE 37, LAMAR 7: The Lions (9-1, 5-0 Region 3 1A) wrapped up the region title with a dominating performance in a first-place showdown. Jordan Strong ran for two second-half touchdowns, and Zach Rogers passed to Riquarius Harris for a touchdown and ran for another score. Jacorreum Hoze also ran for a Lewisville touchdown, and Marcel Fee added a field goal.

McBEE 49, GREAT FALLS 13: Great Falls (2-8, 0-5 Region 3 1A) fell behind 21-0 at the half but closed to 28-13 early in the fourth quarter after scoring on a long pass and a short run. But Jason Brockington ran for two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, allowing McBee (4-5, 2-3) to pull away.
