High school basketball gameday: Your guide to weekend games in Rock Hill area

Rock Hill-area high school basketball teams are staying busy this weekend, and the schedule includes a pair of multi-game showcase events in Rock Hill — plus tournaments elsewhere. Here are previews of the top games, along with a complete schedule for the weekend.

FRIDAY

(girls) Y.C. Winborn Showcase, at Rock Hill High, starts at 1:30 p.m. — There’s a five-game schedule Friday night in the showcase, highlighted by the Greenville-Rock Hill finale at 8 p.m. Greenville (4-4) is led by PG Ava Owens, who is averaging 11.6 points and 4.0 assists per contest. Chloe Hudson (20.9 ppg) leads Rock Hill, which played Independence on Thursday in the first night of the Y.C. Winborn event.

SATURDAY

(boys) Border Classic, at Independence High in Mint Hill, starts at 12:30 p.m. — Rock Hill, Nation Ford and Catawba Ridge will represent York County in this five-game event. Rock Hill (3-6) opens at 12:30 against Myers Park (2-7), with Nation Ford (2-5) meeting Butler (5-3) at 3:30, and Catawba Ridge (3-5) facing Mallard Creek (4-3) at 5 p.m.

(boys and girls) Lindberg Moody Showcase, at Northwestern High, starts at 11 a.m. — Two girls’ and three boys’ games make up the schedule for this event. The 5 p.m. finale pits Charlotte’s Chambers (4-4) against Lancaster (7-1). Chambers’ Markus Kerr, a 6-6 junior guard, is averaging more than 20 points a game. Jordan Watford (25.8 ppg) leads the Lancaster attack. South Pointe’s boys, off to a 5-2 start, play in the 3:30 p.m. game against Cardinal Newman.

(girls) Y.C. Winborn Showcase, at Rock Hill High, starts at 11 a.m. — There are eight games on the Saturday schedule, including Marvin Ridge (7-1) against Riverside (7-1). Marvin Ridge has a young lineup, but the Mavericks are getting strong play from Kate Schindler, who had 14 points and eight rebounds Tuesday, and Jenny Briggs (13 points Tuesday). Riverside has three players averaging between 16 and 17 points a contest.

Chambers vs. Cox Mill, 7:30 (boys) Lancaster (5-1) at Nation Ford (2-4), around 7:30 p.m. — This is a rematch of a game Lancaster won 80-67 last week at home. All-stater Jordan Watford scored 27 points in that game and will look to dominate the rematch. Ben Chuttey and Chase Walters each are averaging more than 13 points a game for Nation Ford, with Walters scoring 24 points in last week’s game against Lancaster.

(girls) Marvin Ridge (6-1) at Fort Mill (5-3), around 6:15 p.m. — Marvin Ridge has taken no prisoners so far this season, outscoring opponents by an average of 18 points a game. The Mavericks’ only loss was to state power Mallard Creek. Fort Mill lost several key players from a year ago, but the Yellow Jackets have looked promising. Their four leading scorers include a freshman, a sophomore, and a junior.

(girls) Rock Hill (5-2, 0-0 Region 3 5A) at Clover (5-1, 0-0), around 6:15 p.m. — This is an interesting region opener, with Rock Hill looking a lot like a state title contender again (outside of those two losses to South Pointe). Senior Aubrey Stevenson scored 30 points last Friday against South Pointe but shot only 36 percent from the floor. Look for her to rebound in this game. But Clover has won most of its game by lopsided scores and is holding opponents to an average of less than 30 points a game.
