High school basketball rewind: Fort Mill, Indian Land boys reach holiday tournament finals
The Fort Mill and Indian Land boys’ teams and the South Pointe girls’ squad are among several Rock Hill-area teams that will play for high school holiday tournament championships Saturday.
Fort Mill (12-1) trounced Spartanburg 63-44 and will play for the Poinsettia Classic championship at 7 p.m. Saturday in Greenville.
Indian Land (12-0) knocked off Fox Creek 71-61 in the semifinals of the Cayce Roundball Classic’s National Bracket tournament. The Warriors will play for the championship at 7 p.m. Saturday at Brookland-Cayce High.
Meanwhile, South Pointe’s girls ran their record to 11-0 by routing Darlington 73-35 in the semifinals of the Chesterfield Christmas Tournament. The Stallions will play for the title at 7 p.m. Saturday.
Also advancing to title games Saturday were the Catawba Ridge girls (in the Red Raider Winter Rumble at South Point), and the Andrew Jackson boys and girls (in the Comporium Classic at Andrew Jackson).

Friday’s top performers
Wallace Campbell, Fort Mill boys: Campbell’s 17 points led the Yellow Jackets past Spartanburg 63-44 in the Poinsettia Classic semifinals.
Michael Jones, Indian Land boys: Jones scored 34 points in the Warriors’ 71-61 victory over Fox Creek, in the semifinals of the Cayce Roundball Classic. It was his second straight 30-point-plus performance in the tournament.
Kaleigh Lucas, South Pointe girls: Lucas, a freshman, scored 29 points and added seven rebounds and six assists in the Stallions; 73-35 romp over Darlington in the Chesterfield Christmas Tournament semifinals. Sophomore Na’Nyia Cunningham added 23 points.
Brycen Redmon, Westminster Catawba boys: Redmon scored 21 points, hitting six of 12 3-point attempts, in his team’s 69-61 loss to Summerville in the Rotary Roundball Classic in North Charleston.
Isaiah Thomas, Nation Ford boys: The Falcons lost a lopsided 68-39 decision to Charlotte Country Day in the Phenom Hoops New Years Bash at Marvin Ridge, but Thomas was a bright spot. A 6-2 sophomore, he scored a team-high 17 points.
Items of note
▪ The South Pointe boys opened play in the American bracket of the Cayce Roundball Classic with a 60-57 victory over Lower Richland. Rydarius Hill led the Stallions with 21 points.
South Pointe coach Melvin Watson said he knew his team would face a challenge.
“They play four guards,” Watson said of Lower Richland. “That’s a tough matchup for us, as a big team. But we were able to handle it.”
▪ Indian Land junior guard Michael Jones had a strong second half Friday against Fox Creek and said he planned it that way. “I told my teammates at halftime, ‘I’m going to come hard at the start of the half.’ ”
