High school basketball rewind: Fort Mill boys edge Clover, South Pointe girls stay unbeaten
Fort Mill, Indian Land and Catawba Ridge were winners in Friday night Region 3 5A boys’ high school basketball games, with Fort Mill taking over first place in the league.
Meanwhile, the Clover, Rock Hill and South Pointe girls’ teams also scored victories in region play.
Here is a roundup of Friday night’s action, along with area and region scores:
BOYS
Fort Mill 51, Clover 46: Wallace Campbell scored 16 points, leading the Yellow Jackets (13-2, 2-0) to a Region 3 5A victory on the road. Logan Parker added 13 points for Fort Mill. Clover fell to 9-5, 1-1.
Indian Land 67, Rock Hill 56: The host Warriors (13-1, 1-0) opened Region 3 5A play with a solid home victory. Indian Land bolted to a 37-26 halftime lead, behind 15 points from Michael Jones. He finished with 27 points.
Andrew Jackson 71, Chesterfield 40: Bryce Peterson poured in 25 points, leading four players in double figures for the visiting Volunteers (5-5, 1-0) in their Region 4 2A opener.
Catawba Ridge 45, Northwestern 31: Mark Caslaru had a big night for the host Copperheads (5-8, 1-1), with 15 points, 16 rebounds and seven blocks. Isaiah Thomas added 11 points and seven rebounds. Northwestern fell to 3-9, 1-1.
Cuthbertson 72, Buford 29: Jake Milhorn scored 15 points for Buford in the loss.
Dreher 73, York 37: Sophomores Deno Gilmore and Peyton Lowery each scored 11 points for the Cougars (1-13, 0-1) in their loss.
Lake Pointe Academy 79, River Walk Academy 41: James Jacobs scored 32 points in leading the Mariners.
Legion Collegiate 70, Jacksonville (FL) San Jose Prep 62: Legion Collegiate trailed for most of the first half but pulled ahead in the third quarter behind two baskets by Jacob Siuta. San Jose Prep closed to within 66-62 in the final minute, but Maddox Cottman hit three free throws to help the Lancers pull away.
Nation Ford 62, Weddington 54: The Falcons (6-6) trailed 27-21 at halftime but rallied to score a mild upset for the visiting Warriors (9-4). Weddington’s K.J. Younger, who averages 25 points a game, did not play Friday night.
South Pointe 50, A.C. Flora 40: R.J. Hill totaled 22 points and 14 rebounds as the Stallions (8-4, 1-0) won their Region 3 4A opener. Tre Raymon added 10 points and 11 rebounds.
GIRLS
South Pointe 65, A.C. Flora 59: The host Stallions (13-0, 1-0) raced to a 23-8 first-quarter lead over the Falcons, but had to hold off an upset bid to win their Region 3 4A opener. JaNyia Cunningham had a big game, with 21 points and 14 rebounds. Serenity Woods added 18 points. A.C. Flora’s defense limited South Pointe’s Kaleigh Lucas to nine points — almost 13 below her per-game average.
Andrew Jackson 70, Chesterfield 31: The visiting Volunteers (10-2, 1-0) made quick work of their opponents, bolting to a 41-12 halftime lead. A running clock was used for much of the second half.
Catawba Ridge 32, Northwestern 30: Brooks Dority hit a short jump shot with eight seconds left, lifting the Copperheads (6-7, 1-1) over the Trojans (3-7, 0-2).
Clover 38, Fort Mill 32: The Blue Eagles (10-2, 2-0) got 11 points from Olivia Lewter in this defensive struggle. Both Clover and Fort Mill (7-7, 1-1) shot less than 35 percent from the floor. Clara Powell had 10 rebounds for the Blue Eagles.
Dreher 59, York 36: The Cougars (0-9, 0-1) fell behind 12-2 after one quarter and couldn’t catch up. Gracin Carroll scored 15 of her team’s 36 points.
Rock Hill 45, Indian Land 40: Aubrey Stevenson scored 18 points, as the Bearcats (9-4, 1-1) won a Region 3 5A game on the road. Emine Hollis added 12 points for Rock Hill.
Westminster Catawba 53, York Prep 29: Leah Ross scored 23 points and Myana Fore added 19 for the victors.
SATURDAY PREVIEW
(girls) Legion Collegiate (12-6) vs. Alpharetta (GA) Valor Christian (12-1), in She Got Game Classic, at LakePoint Sports Center in Atlanta, 4 p.m. — Valor Christian is a Georgia girls’ private school power, led by senior Alyssa Mulholland, who is averaging more than 15 points a game. Legion Collegiate heads to this Atlanta-area girls’ basketball showcase on a six-game winning streak. LaKiara Alexander is averaging 15.1 points a game and shooting better than 60 percent from the floor.
