Power 5 rankings: What are the Rock Hill area’s best high school basketball teams?

The Rock Hill area is loaded with outstanding high school basketball teams, but who is No. 1? And how do the top teams compare against one another?

The Herald this week introduces Power 5 — a ranking of the top five boys and girls high school basketball teams in York, Lancaster and Chester counties.

The Power 5 rankings will be based on season-long performance but will be weighted on how a team has fared in its recent games. We’ll publish the Power 5 at the beginning of each week during the high school basketball season.

This week, the Lancaster boys and South Pointe girls rule the roost.

Boys

1. LANCASTER (10-1) — The Bruins are doing a lot of things right, but perhaps most importantly, they are shooting the ball well.. They’re hitting 48 percent of their shots from the floor.

This week: at Richland Northeast (Monday); A.C. Flora (Wednesday); Dreher (Friday).

2. INDIAN LAND (12-1) — Basketball fans know Michael Jones scores a lot of points, but he’s also a good ball handler and distributor. Jones is carrying an excellent 1.43 assist-to-turnover ratio.

This week: at Nation Ford (Tuesday); Catawba Ridge (Friday)

3. FORT MILL (12-2) — The Yellow Jackets have one of the area’s best-shooting group of starters. Three of the four players with 100 or more field goal attempts this season are shooting 50 percent or better from the floor.

This week: Rock Hill (Tuesday); Northwestern (Friday)

4. CLOVER (10-4) — The Blue Eagles are doing it with defense. They’re shooting only 39 percent from the floor but are forcing 16 turnovers a game.

This week: at Northwestern (Tuesday)

5. YORK PREP (9-3) — Forward Antwon Young has been a huge force this season for a team that has a big game this week at Andrew Jackson.

This week: at Andrew Jackson (Tuesday); Chesterfield (Friday)

In contention: South Pointe (8-4); Lake Pointe Academy (8-2); Andrew Jackson (4-5).

Girls

1. SOUTH POINTE (12-0) — There’s not much of a surprise with this ranking. The Stallions are No. 1 in the state this week, according to MaxPreps. Kaleigh Lucas leads the team with 20.7 points a game.

This week: Camden (Wednesday); at York (Friday).

2. ANDREW JACKSON (10-2) — The Volunteers’ losses this season were to South Pointe (12-0) and Ashley Ridge (14-1). They look the part of a 2A state championship contender.

This week: York Prep (Tuesday); at Buford (Friday)

3. CLOVER (10-2) — The Blue Eagles, who have won five in a row, are holding opponents to an average of 30.62 points per game.

This week: at Northwestern (Tuesday)

4. ROCK HILL (9-4) — Aubrey Stevenson is a complete player. She leads the team in scoring, but also is carrying a 1.63 assists-to-turnover ratio, which must rank among the best in the state.

This week: at Fort Mill (Tuesday); Nation Ford (Friday)

5. LEGION COLLEGIATE (12-6) — LaKiara Alexander leads the Lancers with 15.1 points and 10.2 rebounds a game.

This week: at Charlotte Lab Univ. Prep (Monday); Mountain View Prep (Tuesday); South Charlotte Thunder (Friday)
