Rock Hill area high school basketball rewind: Fort Mill, Indian Land win again

Fort Mill and Indian Land continued on their collision course for a Region 3 5A boys’ basketball showdown by each winning games Tuesday night — but in different ways.

Fort Mill built an early lead and trounced host Northwestern 63-36. Indian Land trailed at halftime against Catawba Ridge but rallied in the second half for a 63-53 victory.

When it was all over, Fort Mill (21-2, 10-0) remained atop the region standings, with Indian Land (21-2, 8-1) right behind.

The two teams meet next Tuesday at Fort Mill.

Elsewhere Tuesday night, Lancaster moved closer to clinching the Region 3 4A championship with an impressive 75-64 victory at Dreher; South Pointe’s girls remained unbeaten with and 83-6 rout of York; and the Andrew Jackson boys’ and girls’ teams won again.

Here is a roundup of Tuesday night’s action:

BOYS

Fort Mill 63, Northwestern 36: The Yellow Jackets cruised, and it was a big night for Jermier Nelson, one of the state’s leading freshmen. Nelson scored a career-high 29 points, and Nas Berry added 13. Northwestern was led by Grant Pursley, with 11 points.

Indian Land 63, Catawba Ridge 53: The visiting Copperheads made Indian Land work for the victory, as they took a 35-30 lead into the locker room at halftime. But Indian Land’s Sequel Patterson scored 15 of his 17 points in the second half. He also finished with five assists. Mike Jones added 14 points, and Jayden Williams scored 12. The Warriors shot 48 percent from the floor.

Mark Caslaru was a big reason why Catawba Ridge was able to stay in the game. Caslaru, the Copperheads’ 6-10 junior center, scored a team-high 16 points and added 13 rebounds. He also had seven blocked shots.

Nation Ford 57, Rock Hill 50: The Falcons built a 38-29 lead after three quarters and hung on for a Region 3 5A triumph.

Lancaster 75, Dreher 64: The Bruins (18-1, 8-0) remained unbeaten in Region 3 4A action, as Jordan Watford scored 24 points and connected on 10-of-15 shots from the floor. Columbus Parker added 19 points, and Malik Tinsley contributed 11 points, seven rebounds and five assists.

South Pointe 83, York 40: The Stallions (15-6, 7-2) moved into sole possession of second place in Region 3 4A, with Dreher’s loss to Lancaster. R.J. Hill led the way with a double-double, totaling 27 points and 10 rebounds. Tre Raymon had 12 points and eight rebounds, and Jah Hill totaled 10 rebounds. Jackson Ramsey led York with 11 points.

Gaston Christian 61, Westminster Catawba 48: Westminster Catawba’s three-game Metrolina Athletic Conference winning streak came to an end, as Gaston Christian surged in the second half. Catawba led 20-11 at halftime, but Gaston Christian piled up a 34-11 margin in the third quarter. Westminster Catawba (12-15, 5-6) has one regular-season game remaining.

Andrew Jackson 91, Buford 39: The Volunteers rolled to a Region 4 2A victory, maing 7-of-12 shots from three-point range. Damias Seegars led the way with 24 points, and Kash Bracey (16), Jy’Kevius Johnson (14) and Zeke Clyburn (14) also scored in double figures. The Volunteers (14-5, 9-0) remained a game ahead of second-place Pageland Central.

Lamar 82, Riverwalk Academy 21: Freshman Lamont Williams scored 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in Lamar’s one-sided Region 2 1A victory.

Legion Collegiate 62, South Charlotte Thunder 60: The Lancers snapped a seven-game losing streak.

Lake Pointe Academy 71, New Covenant Christian 60: The Mariners traveled to Anderson and ran their record to 15-4 on the season.

GIRLS

South Pointe 83, York 6: The Stallions (23-0, 9-0 Region 3 4A) raced to a 50-0 halftime lead. Serenity Woods had 18 points, seven rebounds, four assists and four steals, and Kaleigh Lucas totaled 17 points, seven assists and eight steals. South Pointe had its best shooting night of the season, hitting 50 percent from the floor.

Indian Land 37, Catawba Ridge 23: The host Warriors earned their first Region 3 5A victory in nine tries this season.

Rock Hill 68, Nation Ford 40: Chloe Hudson scored 21 points, and Aubrey Stevenson added 19 in the Bearcats’ Region 3 5A triumph. Nation Ford led 13-12 after the first quarter, but Rock Hill outscored the Falcons 19-3 in the second period.

WEDNESDAY

(Girls) Legion Collegiate (19-12) at 1 of 1 Academy (21-8), 7 p.m. — These teams played last week in Rock Hill, with 1 of 1 Academy winning 66-50. Now they have a rematch in Indian Trail. 1 of 1 Academy shot lights-out from three-point range last week, hitting 14-of-26 from long distance. Legion Collegiate will hope to play better perimeter defense, and that could keep this game close. The Lancers are trying to snap a five-game losing streak.
