SC high school football scores: Northwestern picks up where it left off

New season, same old Northwestern.

The defending state champion Trojans, ranked No. 7 in The Charlotte Observer’s Carolinas top 25 preseason poll, opened their 2025 high school football season with a 39-7 win over eighth-ranked Spartanburg on Friday night.

After a quick score to go ahead 6-0 on its first possession, Northwestern took the wind out of Spartanburg’s sails on the Vikings’ next turn with the ball. Northwestern defender Amarian Coleman picked the ball off at his own goal line and returned it 100 yards for a touchdown. The Trojans added another touchdown early in the second to push the lead to an insurmountable 20-0, and cruised home with the opening-night win.

Spartanburg’s lone touchdown came in the latter half of the third quarter.

No. 12 South Pointe, the only other Rock Hill-area team ranked in The Observer’s poll, fell to Hough of Cornelius, N.C., 14-10, in the Keep Pounding Classic at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte.
