Back to back! Rock Hill girls win second straight wrestling championship

The Rock Hill girls wrestling team capped off its perfect season Saturday afternoon.

The Bearcats defeated Greenwood, 66-15, to win the Class 5A championship at Dreher High School.

The Bearcats have won state titles in each of the two years the SC High School League has held dual championships. Rock Hill defeated Greenwood last year in the championship.

This year, the sport added a classification and Chester defeated Chesnee, 56-24, for the 4A title. It was Chester’s first state title in a girls team sport since 2004.

Rock Hill finished the season 17-0 and was ranked No. 1 by scmat.com heading into the postseason. The Bearcats are 33-0 in dual matches over the past two years.

Rock Hill defeated Spartanburg, 72-12, and White Knoll, 64-18, on Thursday to advance to Saturday’s final four. The Bearcats defeated Blythewood, 47-36, in the semifinals Saturday morning.

Against Greenwood, Rock Hill lost only two contested matches with the other loss coming because of forfeit. Match winners were Kamyla Torres (100), Madi Beck (105), Jenger Rhodes (115), Reagan Beard (120), Audrey Naughton (125), Tatiahna Thomas (130), Alexis Atkinson-Frank (135), Alyciah Thomas (145), Riley Faris (155), Julianna Haas (170) and Bella Williams (235).

Fort Mill, Clover boys advance to championship matches

Fort Mill and Clover boys wrestling teams are headed to dual state championship matches.

FM defeated Eastside, 44-23, in the Class 5A Division II Upper State championship. The Yellow Jackets will face Lugoff-Elgin in the championship match at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at White Knoll High School.

Fort Mill is going for its fourth straight title. FM defeated Lugoff-Elgin, 33-28, in last year’s championship.

Clover is headed to the Class 5A Division I championship after defeating Rock Hill, 40-29, in the Upper state championship. The Blue Eagles will face James Island at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Lexington High School.

The Blue Eagles defeated Boiling Springs in the third round earlier Saturday to make it to the Upper State championship.
