Fort Mill swimmers take 7th straight region title
The Fort Mill Yellow Jackets capped another regular season with an outstanding performance in the Region 3-4A Swim Meet at the Rock Hill Aquatics Center Saturday.
The Yellow Jackets won the regular season title in head-to-head competition during the year in both the girls’ and boys’ divisions for the seventh straight year. They used Saturday’s region meet to qualify more swimmers for next week’s state meet in Columbia.
“We already had 12 qualified for next week,” Fort Mill head coach Cindy Van Buskirk said. “We really had a good day today. We added 11 more to the list of qualifiers for next week.”
The Yellow Jackets dominated the girls’ division in the region meet. They won six individual titles and all three relay events. Gaffney won the other two individual races.
There were four double winners in the girls’ division, threefrom Fort Mill.
Jenna Pehowski won the 200 Freestyle and the 500 Freestyle, Erynn Black won the 200 IM and the 100 Backstroke, and Aubrey Chandler won the 50 Freestyle and the 100 Freestyle for Fort Mill.. Gaffney’s Taylor Covington won the 100 Butterfly and the 100 Breaststroke.
Fort Mill’s competition in the boys races was Nation Ford.Both teams won four individual events with Fort Mill winning two relays and Nation Ford the other.
Fort Mill’s Ben Fenwick was the only double winner in the boys’ division, winning the 200 Freestyle and the 500 Freestyle.
Fort Mill’s single winners were Kasparas Zilinskas (50 Freestyle) and Owen Corkery (100 Backstroke).
Nation Ford’s individual winners were Daniel Martin (200 IM), Isaiah Fitzgerald (100 Butterfly), Samuel Fitzgerald (100 Freestyle), and Ryan Williams (100 Breaststroke).
Fort Mill was the runner-up in both the girls’ and boys’ divisions at the state meet last year,
“I think that both of our teams have a chance to win it all,” said Van Buskirk. “However, I think the girls are in a stronger position than the boys.”
