Fort Mill girls finish second at state swim championship second straight year
For the second year in a row, the Fort Mill Lady Jackets came up just one place short finishing second in the 2015 4A state swimming championships.
It was the fourth runner-up finish for the Fort Mill girls in the past five years.
Riverside swept both the boys and girls titles, while the Lady Jackets finished 154 points behind in second place. The Fort Mill boys finished sixth with 177 points compared to winner Riverside’s 339 points.
Fort Mill head coach Cindy Van Buskirk, who won state swim coach of the year, was happy with how her girls finished.
“I know in their hearts they are ready to beat Riverside,” she said. “The depth and the strength is there. We just need more experience. We are ready to win.”
The Nation Ford boys edged Fort Mill in the standings as they finished in fifth place, four points ahead of the Jackets.
“They all did well,” said Falcons’ head coach Kristin Martin. “All of them dropped their times.”
The Lady Jackets’ Jenna Pehowski finished second in the 200-yard freestyle and third in the 500-yard freestyle. Fort Mill’s Aubrey Chandler finished third in the 50-yard freestyle and Erynn Black finished third in the 100-yard backstroke.
The only local winner came from Fort Mill.
The Jackets’ Ben Fenwick finished second in the 200-yard freestyle as well, but had one of the best races of his life in the 500-yard freestyle winning the state title in 4:42. Nation Ford’s Ryan Williams finished second in the event in 4:44, just two seconds behind.
Fenwick trailed for part of the race, but noticed the swimmers in the lanes beside him ahead of him, so he knew he had to to something.
“When I see people in front of me, it motives me to go faster,” Fenwick said. “I was nervous. I really wanted to win that race.”
The Clover girls finished 13th, while Nation Ford, York and Rock Hill finished 21st through 23rd in the standings.
The Clover boys finished 11th, while Northwestern finished 28th in the standings.
In the 3A state meet, the Eastside boys won with the South Pointe boys finishing ninth and the Lancaster boys finishing 12th. The Stallion boys finished third in the 200-yard free relay.
In the girls meet, Academic Magnet won with the Lancaster girls finishing ninth and South Pointe finishing 21st.
South Pointe’s Claire Holliday won the girls’ 100-yard backstroke in a time of 59.97. She also finished fourth in the 200-yard freestyle as well in 1:57.95.
“It came full circle for her,” said Stallions’ head coach Adam Rainey. “It was emotional for both of us. Capping off her senior year with a state title was great.”
