Anderson, Rock Hill Bearcats edge Lancaster girls 53-52
The Rock Hill Bearcats got 18 points from sophomore RiKoya Anderson to defeat the Lancaster Bruins 53-52 Tuesday night at Rock Hill High. It was the Bruins first loss since February 20, 2014.
Brooklyn Bailey, another sophomore, had 13 for the Bearcats and it was her old-fashioned three-point play with 3:08 left in the game that gave Rock Hill their first lead 45-44. The Bruins led 40-34 after three quarters.
Malia Rivers hit a three at the final buzzer to make it a one-point game at the end of four.
The Bearcats were forced to call timeout at the 3:35 mark in the first period after Lancaster jumped out to a 10-2 lead. Alexis Williams and Rivers had five each in that spurt. The Bruins led 16-8 after the first quarter.
Lancaster had a 10-0 run in the second, but Rock Hill closed the half with a 9-1 run, punctuated by a layup at the buzzer by Kendall Lahr.
Turning point
Malia Rivers bucket put the Bruins in front 46-45, but yet another sophomore, T. Ballard, banked in a three from the top of the key with 1:10 left to give the Bearcats the lead for good.
Critical
The Bruins failed to increase their advantage by only making 7-of-18 from the line in the first half.

Anderson had 18 for Rock Hill. Senior leader Madison Hendrix did not play her usual minutes but did manage six points. Malia Rivers had 23 for Bruins.

“I’m not sure if it’s a statement just yet, but I hope it shows that we’ve matured and we’re ready to compete,” Rock Hill coach Kenny Orr.

The Bearcats will travel to Lugoff-Elgin Wednesday night while Lancaster will host Nation Ford.
