High school roundup: Y.C. Winborn tournament begins Friday

The eighth annual Y.C. Winborn Holiday Basketball Tournament begins Friday with the first game tipping off at noon at Rock Hill High School.

The Rock Hill girls and boys will be in action in the opening round Friday. The Rock Hill girls will take on York Prep at 1:30 p.m. in the main gym. The Rock Hill boys will go against Pinewood Prep at 7:30 p.m. in the main gym.

The only other local team in the event is Lancaster. The Bruins’ boys play Charlotte’s Butler at 4:30 p.m. in the main gym.

The tournament continues with eight games on Saturday and concludes on Monday with eight contests including the finals in both divisions. Action begins on Saturday and Monday at 9:30 a.m.

Indian Land fall sports awards: The Warriors honored several athletes for different accomplishments.

Austin St. John, Previs Suvillaga, Connor Leyland, and Coleman Theodore were named to the All-Region boys cross country team.

St. John was named as team MVP, while Leyland won the Coaches Award. Suvillaga got the Warriors Award, and Theodore was named as Most Improved.

Kaitlyn Rodman, Lauren Sizemore, Baileigh Sizemore, Braeden Rushing, and Morgan Engstrom were tabbed for the All-Region girls cross country team.

Rodman and Lauren Sizemore shared team MVP honors. Baileigh Sizemore won the Coaches Award, and Rushing was selected as Most Improved.

Sophia Hadsall was tabbed for Offensive MVP in volleyball, while Alexis Villarosa was named as the Defensive MVP. The Coaches Award in volleyball went to Emily Alanis, and Maggie Noyes was named to the All-Region volleyball team.

Westminster Catawba players honored: Several Westminster Catawba Indians were selected for All-State and all-conference teams in the Metro Athletic Conference.

Senior Andrew Dillon and junior Christopher Pickel were tabbed for the MAC All-Conference Soccer team. The two players were instrumental in leading the Indians to a 6-6-2 mark this past season.

Senior Sara Beth Jordan sophomore Emma Holtel were selected the NCISAA All-State team. Junior Sunni Baker joined Jordan and Holtel on the MAC All-Conference team.

Jordan had 533 assists and a 92.5 serve percentage. Holtel had 59 blocks, and 179 kills, while Baker recorded 279 digs.

Senior Wesley Cope and sophomore Joey Kendrick were picked for the Pioneer League All-Conference football team. Cope starred at middle linebacker, while Kenrick was a standout at center and long snapper.

Girls’ basketball

Andrew Jackson 59, Lewisville 29: The Volunteers raced to a 29-12 lead after one quarter and toppled the Lions in a non-region contest at Andrew Jackson on Thursday.

Elizabeth Scott led the Volunteers with 22 points. Jordan Green led the Lions with 21 points. Included in Green’s point total were four goals from behind the three-point line.

The loss dropped Lewisville to 1-8 on the year.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Rock Hill 72, Lugoff-Elgin 21: The Bearcats broke to a 24-2 lead after one quarter and routed the Blue Demons in a non-region game at Lugoff.

RiKoya Anderson led the way for the undefeated Bearcats with 16 points. She was joined in double figures by Madison Hendrix with 12 points.

BOYS BASKETBALL

York Prep 74, Walnut Grove 49: Tracus Chisholm scored 20 of his game-high 23 points in the first half and led the Patriots past Walnut Grove in a non-region contest at Walnut Grove.

Freshman D.J. Burns and sophomore Jaron Williams joined Chisholm in double figures with 14 and 13 points respectively.

The Patriots built a commanding 39-18 lead at intermission and cruised on from there to pick up the victory.

Clover 53, Rock Hill 45: The Blue Eagles opened the region season on a successful note by topping the Bearcats in a game at Rock Hill.

The game was close all the way. Clover led by only five at halftime, and had the same lead after three periods.
