Rock Hill girls win Y.C. Winborn tourney title

The Rock Hill Bearcats used a strong second half to down the Wilson Tigers 58-47 and win the Y.C. Winborn Tournament championship Monday night at Rock Hill High School.

The Bearcats outscored the Tigers 27-17 in the second half to pull away for the win.

Kendall Lahr led the Bearcats with 14 points, and Modesty Fobbs added a dozen.

The Bearcats pulled away to 17-10 lead midway through the second period, but Wilson rallied behind Bryanna Goodson, who finished the game with 17 points, to close the deficit to 31-30 at halftime.

The third period was back and forth until Lahr nailed a three-point goal for a 42-37 Rock Hill lead heading to the final period.

Whitney Malone and Fobbs opened the fourth quarter with back-to-back layups and Rock Hill opened a 46-37 cushion with 6:34 left.

The Bearcats were leading 48-41 when Fobbs scored on three straight possesions to offset a pair of goals by the Tigers and Rock Hill was in front 54-43 with 2:09 to play.

Rock Hill’s Rikoya Anderson was named the MVP for the tournament, and Brooklyn Bailey joined her on the All-Tournament team.

Lahe received the female athlete scholarship which is provided by the tournament. The win improved the Bearcats to 10-0 on the season.

The Rock Hill Bearcats fell behind 10-0 in the first three minutes and staged a gradual comeback to edge the Lancaster Bruins 49-44 for fifth place in the Y.C. Winborn Tournament Monday.

Lancaster, behind the scoring of Quay McCarter and Nehemiah McGriff, established the quick lead, and stretched it to 20-7 after one period. Rock Hill cut the margin to 29-19 at intermission.

Andrew Barber spearheaded a third-quarter rally for Rock Hill and Lancaster was clinging to a 36-35 lead when it was over.

With 2:08 remaining in the contest the count was tied at 42-42. Barber nailed a 3-point basket for a 45-42 Bearcat lead. McGriff hit a pair of charity tosses to cut the Rock Hill lead to 45-44 with 1:32 to play.

Lance Crayton’s layup with 33 seconds left made it 47-44. and Tay Brevard sealed the win with a pair of free throws with 10 ticks remaining.

Barber led the Bearcats with 23 points, and was named to the All-Tournament team. McCarter, who was also tabbed for the All-Tournament team, led the Bruins with 11 points.

Donovan Perryman of Rock Hill received the male athlete scholarship.
