The South Pointe Stallions were led by the Williams sisters and used a 7-0 second-quarter run to defeat the Northwestern Trojans 49-35 Wednesday night at South Pointe. It was the second win in back-to-back nights for the Stallions and earned them a season split with the Trojans.

The Stallions led 9-6 after one quarter and started the second on a 7-0 run to lead 16-6. The Trojans did not reach double figure scoring until 8.2 seconds remained in the half when Carley Howell hit a three and was fouled.

Howell made the free throw for a four-point play that cut the South Pointe lead to 20-13 at halftime. Howell had five in each of the second and third quarters to lead the Trojans with ten points. Both teams were playing their second game in as many nights. The Trojans had defeated the Stallions last month 58-49 at Northwestern.

South Pointe boys stave off Trojans’ comeback

Quay Brown scored eight of his 19 in the fourth quarter and the South Pointe Stallions held off a determined Northwestern comeback for an 82-75 victory Wednesday night at South Pointe.

The Trojans got as close as 71-69 with 2 minutes, 20 seconds remaining on a bucket by Myliek Durham, two of his team-high 17. Brown answered with two layups off of fast breaks and hit two free throws to push the margin back out to 77-69.

"(Northwestern) coach (John) Bramlett did a really good job getting his guys back into the game," South Pointe coach Melvin Watson said. "But I thought we did a good job of regrouping, not panicking, and making free throws when we needed to. We're capable of building a big lead but we're capable of giving up a big lead too."

Brown had picked up two quick fouls in the first and had to sit the rest of the period. The Stallions led 12-11 heading into the second. Leading 17-16, they increased their lead with an 8-0 run. Northwestern was 9-of-23 from the free throw line in the first half and trailed 34-24 at intermission.

Jaquarius Clowney had eight of his 14 in the fourth quarter, including two three-pointers during a 9-0 run that cut the Trojan deficit to 64-61 with five minutes left.

The game was a rematch of a Northwestern home win last month. This was the second win in as many nights for the Stallions as they head into region play Friday at Chester.
