High school roundup: Rock Hill basketball sweeps Gaffney

Rock Hill boys’ basketball knocked off visiting Gaffney 69-65 in overtime. Japree Perry led the Bearcats with 21 points, Andrew Barber added 20 and Lance Crayton chipped in 16 for Rock Hill, which out-scored the Indians 11-7 in the extra period.

The Bearcats are back in action on Monday with a region tilt at York.

Girls’ basketball

The Rock Hill girls topped Gaffney 61-42 in a Region 3-4A showdown at Rock Hill on Thursday night.

Rock Hill led only 26-18 at intermission, but pulled away in the second half for the region victory.

Rikoya Anderson led the Bearcats with 19 points. She had four goals from beyond the arc. Brooklyn Bailey chipped in 10 points to the winning effort.

MiKayla Walker led Gaffney with 14 points.

The win improved Rock Hill to 3-0 in region play. They are the only unbeaten team in region play this year. The loss dropped Gaffney to 3-1 in the league.

Wrestling

The annual Bearcat Invitational begins Friday for a two-day run at Rock Hill High.

The 28-team field includes defending Class 4A state champion Rock Hill, Class 4A state runner-up Fort Dorchester, Class 3A semifinalist South Pointe, and North Carolina Class 2A state champion Hunter Huss.

The action begins Friday night at 6 p.m. Saturday’s events start at 9 a.m.

Fort Mill 68, Westwood 42: The Yellow Jackets raced to a 35-24 lead at halftime and claimed a win over the Redhawks in a non-region game in Fort Mill.

Tanner Mitchell led the way for Coach Dwayne Hartsoe’s Yellow Jackets with 31 points. He was joined in double figures by A. J. Foti, who tossed in 11 points.

Winborn All-Tournament Team Selected: The All-Tournament team for the Y.C. Winborn Holiday Classic was announced, and a trio of Rock Hill Bearcats headline the team.

RiKoya Anderson of Rock Hill was tabbed as the tournament’s most outstanding player, while teammates Brooklyn Bailey and Kendall Lahr were selected for the team.

Other players named to the team were Denisha Hall of York Prep, Molly Mann of Weddington, Alexis Jones of Union County, Ryan Scott of River Bluff, Casey Bigham of Marvin Ridge, Bryanna Goodson of Wilson, and Diamond Husky of Hunter Huss.
