High school notes: Hart named CAA rookie of the week
Dupree Hart’s college baseball career is off to a fast start.
The former Northwestern two-sport star went 6-for-10 with three doubles and six RBI in the College of Charleston’s three-game series against Nebraska. Hart, who started at second base for the Cougars, posted a .714 on-base percentage thanks in part to four walks.
Hart did have a fielding error that cost runs in the 4-0 loss last Friday to the Cornhuskers. But the made up for it with his bat during Sunday’s series finale, knocking in four runs during Charleston’s 7-3 win.
College of Charleston has five players from York and Chester counties on its roster this season, including senior starting pitcher Nathan Helvey. He threw six innings during the Friday loss as the Cougars’ No. 1 starter, allowing four hits and no runs, while fanning four and walking two.
The Cougars’ bullpen later relinquished the lead, but coach Matt Heath said Helvey was “unbelievable.”
“He’s a Friday night guy because I’ve seen what I saw tonight,” Heath added. “He’s one of the best pitchers in the CAA if not the entire southeast.”
