Chester’s Williams, Lancaster’s Rivers named players of the year in Region 3-3A

Region 3-3A’s All-Region boys’ team included seven locals, led by Chester’s Malik Williams, the region player of the year.

Williams, a junior guard, was joined by teammate Demetric Hardin. Lancaster put Lewis Johnson and Nehemiah McGriff on the all-region list, while Region 3-3A champs South Pointe had Quay Brown, Nick McCloud and Derion Kendrick selected.

Brown finished second in the player of the year voting, and both he and Williams were named 3A all-state. South Pointe’s Melvin Watson was named coach of the year for the region.

Lancaster’s Malia Rivers was named Region 3-3A girls’ basketball player of the year, with Bruins coach Ronnie Robinson taking the coach of the year honors. Lancaster players Keyotta Garris, Alexis Williams and Hayden Thorne also made the All-Region team.

South Pointe’s T’Keia and T’Kaja Williams were selected, along with teammate Izzy Clark. Chester didn’t submit players in time to be considered, according to the region girls’ basketball director.
