Gaffney Indians fluster Rock Hill en route to high school baseball victory

Special to The Herald

The Rock Hill Bearcats got runners on base all night but struggled to get them home as they fell 6-2 to the Gaffney Indians Tuesday.

The home team left 11 runners on base for the night.

Gaffney put two on the board in the first inning. Bryson Ward led off with a double to the fence in left and scored one out later on Houston Wright's double to right. With two outs, Wright came home on a Damion Eubanks single to center but Collins Bennett made a strong throw to nail Josh Gregory at the plate for the third out.

The Bearcats got two runners in scoring position in the home half of the inning, but a fly out to center ended the threat.

The Indians tacked on two more in the third when Gregory laced a two-run double to center.

Rock Hill got on the board in the bottom of the third. Brandon Banks led off with a double to left and Davis Owens pinch-ran. Owens alertly advanced to third on a Brock Rogers grounder to second and then scored on a ball in the dirt that trickled away from the catcher. The Bearcats put two more runners on but couldn't push them across.

Dylan Peterson led off the fourth with a home run over the right-centerfield fence to make it 5-1.

The visitors added another in the fifth when Ashby Smith was hit by a pitch and came home on a double by Trent McDaniel. Freshman Anthony Alejandro stranded two Gaffney runners in scoring position with three strikeouts in the inning.

The Bearcats scored another in their fifth. Wes Bostic singled and went to third on Bennett's double in the right-field corner. Bostic scored on Oates' groundout to second.

TURNING POINT

The Indians jumped on Rock Hill early with the two first-inning runs and doubled their lead with two more in the third. The early deficit put pressure on the Bearcats and they couldn't drive enough runners in to catch up.

CRITICAL

Rock Hill got runners on base but stranded 11 total for the night. In the bottom of the sixth, down 6-2, the Bearcats put runners on first and second with one out and Conner Edkins sent a sinking line drive to left. Gregory, the Gaffney left-fielder, made a diving catch and threw behind the runner at second to double him off for the third out. If the ball had gotten by, two runs would have scored and cut the lead in half. As it was, the double play ended Rock Hill's last threat.

STAR CONTRIBUTORS

Anthony Alejandro and Bryson Sherrill both pitched a scoreless inning for Rock Hill. Alejandro struck out three. Brandon Banks reached base three times for the Bearcats. Collins Bennett was 3-for-4 with an outfield assist from his centerfield position in the first inning.
