Gaffney takes team win in Rock Hill golf tournament
Gaffneywon the Tom Fleischer Invitational Golf Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Rock Hill Country Club, with a second day score of 293 for a two-day total of 593.
Boiling Springs finished second, 21 strokes behind Gaffney, followed by Dorman, 638; Clover, 650; and Rock Hill, 654; to rounded out the top five.
“We played well both days,” Gaffney head coach Brandon Coggins said. “This should be a real confidence builder for us heading into the region tournament and beyond.”
Coggins, who is in his fifth year at Gaffney, wanted to be in this tournament because they have not played every team in Region 3-4A.
“This is a measuring stick for us,” added Coggins. “This team has worked very hard in the offseason and during the spring campaign to be a better team. This was a good tournament for us.”
Trent Phillips of Boiling Springs won the individual title with a 36-hole score of 140. He carded a 71 on Saturday after firing a 69 in Friday’s opening round.
Phillips, who is the No. 1 golfer for Boiling Springs, is no stranger to success on the golf course.
He is a sophomore but has played on the varsity for four year.
“I like this course very much,” said Phillips. “I like the layout, and I thought I played well both days.”
Phillips had a four stroke lead after Friday’s opening round. Zach Gordon of Gaffney turned in a 67 on Saturday to come from six strokes back. He finished two strokes off the pace in second place.
“I did not pay attention to what the other players were doing,” said Phillips, who has already committed to Georgia. “I just played my game.”
The young golfer said winning this tournament will help going forward, “I have won tournaments in the past, and every time you win it gives you confidence. With the region tournament coming up this will certainly help me.”
George Eubank, Jr. of Dorman was third with a two-day card of 145. Cody Transou of Gaffney and Harrison Corbin of Boiling Springs tied for fourth at 149. Andrew White of Clover was the top local golfer in the event with a 36-hole score of 152, which was good enough for eighth place.
