High school roundup: Westminster Catawba baseball wins playoff opener

BASEBALL

Westminster Catawba 7, Calvary Baptist 4: The Westminster Catawba Indians defeated Calvary Baptist in the opening round of the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association baseball playoffs.

Carson Rowland picked up the victory for the Indians, seeded No. 12 in the tournament. Calvary Baptist was seeded fifth.

Jake Early led the Indians’ offense with three hits and a pair of runs batted in. Carson Rowland helped his own cause with a pair of hits and drove in one run.

Scott Corley and Cole Bagley each had one hit for Westminster Catawba. Corley drove in a pair of runs, while Bagley had one RBI.

Lewisville baseball stays alive: Lewisville beat Dixie 3-0 in a 1A Upper State baseball tournament elimination game on the road Wednesday night. The Lions advanced to Friday’s Upper State championship against McBee, but the Lions will have to win twice if they’re to return to the state title series for the second year running.

Jerry Thomas’ Lewisville softball team lost 7-0 to Fox Creek Wednesday night, ending the Lions’ year. Fox Creek plays Dixie needing to win twice to move on to the state finals.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Indian Land 2, Powdersville 1: The Indian Land Warriors defeated Powdersville Tuesday to win the Upper State championship in the Class 2A boys’ soccer playoffs.

The Warriors made their way to the Upper State finals with a 6-3 win over Mid-Carolina. They have outscored their opponents 15-5 in the four games in the playoffs.

Indian Land will take on Bishop England for the Class 2A state title at 7 p.m. Friday at Irmo High School.

GOLF

South Pointe, Lancaster qualify for state 3A tourney: The South Pointe Stallions and the Lancaster Bruins will be playing in the Class 3A state golf tournament next week.

Lancaster finished fifth in the Upper State tournament with a score of 328. South Pointe turned in a team score of 337, which was good enough for the sixth spot.

Lancaster was led by Brady Hinkle with a 72. Baylee Evans carded an 84, while Mason Tucker and Trey Crenshaw had rounds of 85 and 87, respectively.

The Stallions were led by Bryan Edwards with an 80. Wyatt Reid was next with an 84. Jacob Spooner had an 85, and Benny Smith turned in an 88.

Great Falls 10th in Class A state tourney: The Great Falls Red Devils shot a two-day total of 773 and finished 10th in the Class A boys’ state championship.

Christ Church of Greenville won the 36-hole event with a two-day total of 587. St. Joseph’s of Greenville, Fox Creek, McBee and South Christian completed the top five.

Alex Black was the top performer for Great Falls. He had rounds of 84 and 98 for a 36-hole total of 182. That placed him 37th overall in the field.

Travis Payne had scores of 87 and 97 for a total of 184. Jarrett Hinson (97-98–195), Eric Cage (103-109–212) and Jonathan Trent (116-112–228) completed the scoring for the Red Devils.

Rock Hill 9th in 4A Upper State tourney: The Rock Hill Bearcats were the top finisher among three local teams in the Class 4A Upper State tournament.

Rock Hill had a team score of 318, which was three strokes off the pace from qualifying for the state tournament next week.

Fort Mill and Nation Ford also missed qualifying for next week’s event. Both teams had team totals of 328.

Rock Hill was led by Nick Mayfield with a 77. Fred Croom fired a 78, while Zach Reuland and Manning Sloop had rounds of 80 and 83, respectively.

Fort Mill was led by Cam Marshall with an 80. Ryan Seco followed with an 81, and Dalton Vickers carded an 83. Michael Wheeler and Tyler Patterson each had rounds of 84.

Nation Ford’s top performer was Jake Norwood, who fired a 79. Nolan Wood was next with an 81. Daniel King had an 82, and Jackson Bridges had an 86.

Individually, Andrew White of Clover fired a 72 in the Upper State tournament and qualified for next week’s 4A state tournament. Clover did not qualify as a team for the Upper State tournament.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Martin named All-Star coach: Northwestern tennis coach Jim Martin has been selected as one of the coaches for the North-South All-Star Boys’ Tennis Match.

Todd Seagle of Spartanburg is the other coach for the North squad in the match.

The event will take place May 21 at The Pavilion in Taylors.
