Northwestern hosting 16-team Air Raid 7-on-7 tourney Thursday
Northwestern welcomes a field loaded with local powerhouses from both Carolinas on Thursday in the program’s annual Air Raid 7-on-7 tournament.
Eleven of the 16 teams have combined for 37 football state titles, led by Spartanburg’s six in the modern era. South Pointe and Northwestern have each claimed five and Rock Hill two (since desegregation); all three of those schools will play Thursday, with South Pointe fielding two squads.
Some of Charlotte’s best prep powers will make the trek down I-77 to get some quality summer repetitions. Butler, Mallard Creek, Charlotte Catholic and Charlotte Christian are all annual state championship contenders north of the border.
After pool play in the morning, the teams will play a knockout tournament in the afternoon to determine the champ.
Group A: Northwestern, Charlotte Christian, Woodruff, Butler, Spartanburg, Hillcrest, Providence and Westside.
Group B: South Pointe B, Charlotte Catholic, Dutch Fork, Burns (NC), Rock Hill, Mallard Creek, South Pointe and Dorman.
