Which teams do local schools play in 2018 non-region football schedule?

Rock Hill’s 2018 non-region schedule gives it a much more realistic chance of competing than the schedule it’s had the last two seasons, unquestionably one of the toughest in the state.

Most schools in South Carolina have their 2018-19 football schedules set.

Chester is still looking for a game in Week 3, but most of the other area schedules are locked up, including Indian Land. The school’s enrollment continues to balloon and its sports teams will likely land in the 4A classification in the 2020 realignment. Football coach Horatio Blades scheduled with that reality in mind, including usual opponents Buford and Blacksburg, but also Rock Hill and South Pointe. Indian Land has never played either school before; the difference in size and numbers was always too great.

Another school scheduling up is Chester. Victor Floyd has rebuilt the Cyclones with an easier set of opponents the last two seasons and the program is ready for a step up. He’s still looking for the one remaining game but the Cyclones’ 2018 non-region is already tougher than it has been the last two years.

Two programs scheduling in the opposite direction: Rock Hill and South Pointe.

The Bearcats have played one of the toughest schedules in the state the last few years and get a welcome bit of relief in 2018. With all respect to Lugoff-Elgin, Indian Land and Chester, Rock Hill will have a better experience playing them than Dorman, Gaffney and Boiling Springs.

South Pointe will get hammered by graduation next May, which may have been on Strait Herron’s mind when setting up his 2018 non-region. The Stallions swapped perennial powerhouses Buford (Ga.) and Shelby (N.C.) for Greenville and Indian Land.

Here are the non-region opponents (listed alphabetically) for nine of the 12 schools in The Herald’s coverage area:
