Local CFB players roundup: former York Cougars catch game-winning TDs
Josh McCoy, N.C. Central - York’s McCoy caught a 38-yard touchdown pass, his first at NCCU, with just over 5 minutes to play, which proved to be the winning touchdown in N.C. Central’s 33-28 win over South Carolina State last Thursday. The TD was McCoy’s only catch; the Eagles only completed five passes.
Markell Castle, Newberry - former York Cougar caught six passes for 100 yards and two touchdowns, including the winning score in Newberry’s 25-21 road win at Carson-Newman. Castle’s 12-yard TD catch opened the scoring and his 30-yard catch and run for another TD with 39 seconds left completed the Wolves’ comeback from a 21-10 deficit. Castle was named the South Atlantic Conference’s offensive player of the week on Monday.

Rylan Wells, Jacksonville - Wells had another big game at the helm for the Dolphins, the former Fort Mill Yellow Jacket rushing for three touchdowns and throwing for two in a 44-37 win over Marist. Wells was 10-for-14 passing for 154 yards and he ran the ball 12 times for 78 more. His 2-yard TD run with about 5 minutes left proved the game-winner and he also punted five times for a 34-yard average with one kick downed inside the 20-yard line.
Mike Hill, Iowa Western - Lewisville’s Hill was kept out of the end zone but still had a huge outing during the Reivers’ 57-14 mauling of Coffeyville Community College in Kansas juco football. Hill, a true freshman receiver, caught 14 passes for 136 yards, part of a 633-yard offensive effort by Iowa Western. He’s second in all of junior college football with 35 receptions in four games, though he still hasn’t scored a touchdown yet.
Dijuan Ussery, Missouri Western - Nation Ford’s Ussery jump-started his senior season with a huge game in Missouri Western’s 41-37 win over Central Oklahoma. Ussery caught three passes for 39 yards and a touchdown and ran the ball once for a 45-yard touchdown, with the two TDs putting the Griffons in the lead for good against Central Oklahoma.
Quan Caldwell, South Carolina State - Chester’s Caldwell caught six passes for 91 yards and a touchdown during the Bulldogs’ 33-28 loss to N.C. Central last Thursday.
Anthony Johnson, Buffalo - South Pointe product had another big game for Buffalo in the Bulls’ second straight win. Johnson caught six passes for 87 yards, including a fourth quarter touchdown that proved the game-winner in Buffalo’s 34-31 victory over Florida Atlantic. Johnson, the redshirt junior receiver that spent two years in the junior college ranks, has three TD catches this fall.

Reubyn Walker, Benedict - the former Northwestern Trojan linebacker posted 13 tackles during the Tigers’ 31-28 overtime loss to Fort Valley State. Walker made 2.5 tackles-for-loss and recorded a sack, continuing his strong senior year down in Columbia.
Zeek Rodney, Wake Forest - redshirt junior defensive tackle finished with a career-high six tackles, including two for a loss during the Demon Deacons’ 20-19 win over Appalachian State.
Manny McCord, Newberry - Indian Land’s McCord had one of his best games for Newberry, catching two passes for 78 yards and recovering a fumble that led to a comeback-fueling touchdown. McCord also made a tackle.
Other locals’ performances
Malik Williams, Appalachian State - Chester’s Williams caught three passes for 22 yards but Appalachian State fell to 2-2 after a 20-19 loss to undefeated Wake Forest. Williams and York’s Beau Nunn both started for the Mountaineers’ offensive unit.
Shavares Crockett, ASA Miami - Crockett, a South Pointe grad, recovered a fumble during ASA Miami’s junior college football loss to Snow College (Utah).
Antonio Dawkins, Bluefield College (W.Va.) - Dawkins, the former Fort Mill Yellow Jacket, made a pair of tackles during Bluefield’s 24-13 loss to Georgetown (Ky.).
Jamah Mitchell, Campbell - Northwestern grad made started in the middle of Campbell’s defensive line and made two tackles during the Camels’ 49-21 win over Stetson. York’s Shuler Littleton also started, continuing his run as the Camels’ first team offensive right tackle.
Eric Westbrook, Campbell - former South Pointe Stallion recorded a tackle against Stetson.
Brandon Plyler, Concord (W.Va.) - Plyler, from Fort Mill High, made three catches for 50 yards during the Mountain Lions’ 44-13 loss to Notre Dame College. Chris Norman, another former Yellow Jacket, started on the Mountain Lions’ offensive line.
Chris Bouyer, East Tennessee State - Northwestern’s Bouyer made a tackle and recorded a QB hurry during the Bucs’ overtime comeback win against Mercer.
Donovan Perryman, Furman - former Rock Hill Bearcat made a tackle as Furman picked up its first win of the season, a 45-14 win over Colgate.
Andrew Komornik, Gardner-Webb - former Nation Ford punter continued a solid final season of college football during a loss to Wofford. Komornik hit four punts for a 42-yard average with one downed inside the 20.
Jae’vion Matthews, Georgia Military - the York Cougar standout made three tackles during the Bulldogs’ 39-38 win over ASA College two weeks ago. GMC football stats are usually a week behind but Matthews is playing as a true freshman at the junior college.
Jerry Howard, Georgia Tech - Howard, the former Northwestern Trojan standout, carried the ball three times for 19 yards during the Yellow Jackets’ 35-17 win over Pitt.
Trae’von Hinton, Highland Community College (Kans.) - Hinton, the former Northwestern Trojan, made two tackles during his team’s 13-10 loss to Hutchinson Community College.
Denzel Marshall, Johnson C. Smith - Chester’s Marshall started at right tackle for the Golden Bulls during their 20-17 win over Elizabeth City State.
Nick McCloud, North Carolina State - McCloud, from South Pointe, made three tackles as the Wolfpack upset Florida State 27-21.
Jaleel Scott, New Mexico State - UTEP was the first team to keep Scott out of the end zone this season, but he still had four catches for 74 yards during the Aggies’ 41-14 win over the Miners. The former Rock Hill Bearcat has 26 catches this season, three more than he had all of 2016.
Greg Ruff, Newberry - former South Pointe QB was 3-for-3 passing for 28 yards and also ran the ball three times for 16 more yards during the Wolves’ win over Carson-Newman.
Darryl Foster, Newberry - Chester’s Foster recorded a tackle and forced a fumble that led to a third quarter Newberry touchdown.
Tony Gaston, Newberry - Gaston, from Lewisville High, made a tackle against Carson-Newman.
Nick Truesdale, Newberry - true freshman cornerback from Rock Hill High made his first college tackle during the Wolves’ win over Carson-Newman.
Shea Rodgers, Newberry - Indian Land grad hit both of his field goal attempts, with a long of 39, an extra point and averaged 40 yards on three punts during the Wolves’ win over Carson-Newman.
Ali Shockley, North Greenville - Northwestern’s Shockley made two tackles during the Crusaders’ 27-20 win over Limestone. The true freshman also returned a pair of kickoffs for 25 total yards.
Mason Rudolph, Oklahoma State - the Cowboys’ College Football Playoff hopes are likely shot after they fell 44-31 to TCU. Rudolph, the former Northwestern Trojan, completed 22-of-41 passes for 398 yards and two touchdowns, with two interceptions. He was also sacked three times.
Riley Hilton, Presbyterian - Nation Ford’s Hilton caught two balls for 10 yards during the Blue Hose’s 27-20 win over Cumberland.
Cole Martin, Stetson - Nation Ford QB complete 4-of-6 passes for 46 yards and a touchdown in relief duty during the Hatters’ 49-21 loss to Campbell.
Nick Sturgill, Walsh (Ohio) - York’s Sturgill assisted on five tackles during the Cavaliers’ 57-6 loss to Central Connecticut State.
Detorien Rawlinson, William Penn (Iowa) - defensive back from York made two tackles and broke up a pass during William Penn’s 25-20 win over Evangel.
Jay Hood, Wingate - Lancaster grad caught two passes for 31 yards during Wingate’s 22-14 win over Lenoir-Rhyne.
Kendrick Hicks, Wingate - Rock Hill true freshman linebacker made a tackle during the Bulldogs’ win over Lenoir-Rhyne.
Terrance Morris, Wofford - Chester Cyclone made a tackle as Wofford knocked off Gardner-Webb 27-24.
