Chavis scored again for the Trojans when he took a 32-yard pass from Mattison, and they were in front 34-7 midway through the third quarter.

Wren 23, Clover 21

A year after going unbeaten in the regular season for the first time in school history, the Clover Blue Eagles opened their 2020 campaign with a loss to defending 4A state champs, Wren, 23-21, on Friday evening at Memorial Stadium.

Trailing by two scores with under two minutes to play, the Blue Eagles made a bid for an opening night comeback. With just over a minute left to play, sophomore quarterback Joe Boyd hit Shamajay Poole over the middle and Poole battled through a tackle to reach the end zone and bring the Blue Eagles within one score, 23-21. The ensuing onside kick was recovered by Zach Jordan with one minute remaining in the game.

The Blue Eagles were unable to move the chains and turned the ball over on downs, which allowed Wren to run out the clock.

Following a season that saw the offensive record books rewritten, the Blue Eagles took a quarter and a half to find their footing on offense against the Hurricanes. Clover went three-and-out on its first offensive series and quickly fell behind on the scoreboard when punter JB Potts dropped the snap in the end zone and was tackled by a host of Hurricanes for a safety.

The Clover defense did its part to give the offense time to find itself. Senior Chance Mackey snagged an interception on a deflected pass and raced 53 yards to put the Blue Eagles up 7-2.

Wren grabbed the lead back in the second quarter after converting on a fake punt to extend its drive before Malachi Hill raced in from 15 yards out to put Wren back in front, 9-7, in the second quarter.

Turnovers and miscues plagued Coach Lane’s young team a various points throughout the night, including a fumble recovery that was returned 25 yards to give Wren a 16-7 leading midway through the second period of play.

The Blue Eagles were able to respond and take advantage of a Hurricane muffed punt when BJ Tims scored his first touchdown of the season on a 15-yard around on the right side to pull the Blue Eagles within two. Clover had an opportunity to take the lead into intermission with the Blue Eagles have three chances to power the ball into the end zone from inside the five yard line. The Hurricane defense stepped up to the challenge, though, stopping Tims at the half yard line as time expired in the first half.

After a third quarter stalemate, Malachi Hill added his second score of the game when he took a pitch off left tackle 25 yards for a touchdown giving Wren a 23-14 lead with 5:27 left in the game.

The Clover defense turned in a strong performance on the night, forcing four turnovers — two interceptions and two fumble recoveries. Much like the Blue Eagles’ offense, the Clover defense is replacing a hefty percentage of its production from a season ago.

Clover will travel to Fort Mill next week for its first league game of the season. Fort Mill enters the game with a 0-1 record in league play after falling to Nation Ford in the Milltown Classic on opening night.

The Silver Foxes made it 30-0 early in the third period, but Great Falls countered. Xavier Brown rambled 62 yards on a quarterback keeper to cut the deficit to 30-6 with just more than nine minutes left in the third quarter.
