The Herald’s Oct. 15 scoreboard: Rock Hill wins, Clover earns playoff spot, more

Scores from Rock Hill, Clover, Fort Mill

South Pointe 28, Indian Land 13

Rock Hill 24, Blythewood 20

The Rock Hill Bearcats defeated the Blythewood Bengals 24-20 in a Region 4-5A game at District Three Stadium.

Blythewood led 7-2 after one period, and the Bengals scored early in the second quarter for a 14-2 lead. Harrison Collins passed to Anthony McCullough for the first Blythewood score, and Desmond Boatwright ran for the second one.

Rock Hill countered with two touchdowns and added a two-point conversion on the second one for a 17-14 lead at halftime. Matthew Wilson passed for both Bearcat scores. He ran the two-point conversion after the second touchdown.

Rock Hill opened the scoring in the second half with a touchdown for a 24-14 advantage midway through the third period. Wilson hooked up with tight end Luke Bracey for the score midway through the quarter.

Blythewood cut it to 24-20 late in the quarter on a 27-yard run by Boatwright, and the two teams played defense to close out the game.

Rock Hill improved to 1-1 in the region and 2-4 overall. Blythewood fell to 0-2 in the region and 3-4 overall.

Northwestern 35, Spring Valley 21

The Northwestern Trojans defeated the Spring Valley Vikings 35-21 in a Region 4-5A game at Spring Valley.

Spring Valley took a 7-0 lead in the first period when DeQuandre Smith passed to Deshun Jordan on a 41-yard play. The Trojans tied it with just less than four minutes remaining in the opening period on a 26-yard pass from Will Mattison to Elijah Caldwell.

The Vikings countered in a hurry. Smith capped a long drive with a one-yard run and Spring Valley led 14-7 with 20 seconds left in the first period.

The Trojans went to work and regained the lead. Mattison passed for two touchdowns and Northwestern had a 21-14 advantage. Mattison’s first scoring aerial was to Christi Watkins for eight yards and the second was to Caldwell for 19 yards.

Spring Valley came back to tie the game at 21-21 before the half. Smith passed to Jack Aldighiere on a 45-yard play for the touchdown.

The second half belonged to the Trojans. The offense turned out two more scores, while the defense stepped it up a notch and stopped Spring Valley from scoring.

Mattison found Watkins on a five-yard play for the third quarter score which made it 28-21. Mattison ran in from four yards out to cap the scoring with just less than five minutes remaining in the game.

Northwestern piled up 449 total yards and had 27 first downs. Spring Valley totaled 351 yards with 17 first downs.

Mattison completed 22 of 37 pasees for 22 yards. Qua Howard led the rushing attack with 78 yards on 13 carries. Turbo Richard added 69 yards on 14 carries. Watkins had 10 receptions for 104 yards. Caldwell had seven catches for 110 yards.

Isaac McLellan led the Trojans’ defense with seven tackles, including three for a loss. Austin Wilkes, Ashton Latta, and DJ Jackson recorded five tackles each.

Northwestern is 3-0 in the region and 8-1 overall. Spring Valley dropped to 2-1 in region play and 5-2 in all games.

Clover 17, Boiling Springs 7

The Clover Blue Eagles toppled the Boiling Springs Bulldogs 17-7 in a Region 3-5A game at Boiling Springs.

Both teams scored in the first quarter for a 7-7 tie. The Blue Eagles added a touchdown and a field goal in the second period for a 17-7 halftime lead.

The win improved Clover to 2-0 in the region and 3-3 overall. Boiling Springs dropped to 0-3 in the region and 0-8 in all games.

Gaffney 42, Nation Ford 21

The Gaffney Indians toppled the Nation Ford Falcons 42-21 in a Region 3-5A game at Gaffney.

The Indians took a 14-7 lead after one period and stretched it to 35-7 at intermission.

The Falcons countered with a touchdown in the third quarter to cut it to 35-14. Gaffney opened the scoring in the fourth period with a score for a 42-14 advantage. Nation Ford completed the scoring late in the final period.

Gaffney improved to 2-0 in the region and 8-0 in all games. The Falcons dropped to 2-1 in region play and 4-4 in all games.

York 56, Fort Mill 14

The York Cougars scored in every quarter and crushed the Fort Mill Yellow Jackets 56-14 in a non-region game at York.

The Cougars led 7-0 after one period and 28-0 at halftime. They were up 49-0 after three quarters.

York improved to 6-1 overall, while Fort Mill dropped to 1-6 on the year.

Catawba Ridge 31, Lancaster 10

The Catawba Ridge Copperheads defeated the Lancaster Bruins 31-10 in a Region 3-4A game at Lancaster.

The Copperheads broke a 7-7 tie after one quarter and took a 14-10 lead at halftime. When the third quarter was completed, Catawba Ridge led 17-10. They tacked on two more touchdowns in the final 12 minutes.

Catawba Ridge is now 1-2 in the region and 4-4 overall. Lancaster fell to 0-2 in region action and 2-3 in all games.

Andrew Jackson 21, Cheraw 7

The Andrew Jackson Volunteers topped the Cheraw Braves 21-7 in a Region 4-2A game at Cheraw.

The victory improved the Vols to 3-0 in the region and 6-2 overall. Cheraw fell to 2-1 in the region and 4-3 in all games.

McBee 40, Lewisville 24

The McBee Panthers used a ball control offense and an opportunistic defense and defeated the Lewisville Lions 40-24 in a Region 2-1A game at Richburg.

The Panthers led 8-0 after one quarter. They added another score early in the second period for a 16-0 cushion. The Lions scored to cut it to 16-8, but the Panthers rallied to make it 24-8 at halftime.

The teams traded scores in the third period and that left McBee with a 32-16 lead when it was over. The Panthers added a score early in the fourth quarter to take a 40-16 lead, and the Lions closed the scoring with a touchdown in the last two minutes.

McBee is now 2-1 in the region and 2-4 overall. Lewisville dropped to 0-3 in the region and 3-5 in all games.

Legion Collegiate 24, St. Joseph’s 17

The Legion Collegiate Lancers edged the St. Joseph’s Eagles 24-17 in a non-region game in Gastonia Thursday night.

Legion Collegiate improved to 1-4 with the win.

Chester 43, Hickory 0

The Chester Cyclones took a 29-0 lead at halftime and routed the Hickory Hawks 43-0 in a non-region game in Hickory Thursday night.

Chester improved to 5-3 with the victory.
