The Herald’s Nov. 5 scoreboard: Catawba Ridge, South Pointe move on; 6 area teams fall

Northwestern 52, Boiling Springs 7

Irmo 21, York 10

Spring Valley 32, Nation Ford 24

The Spring Valley Vikings edged the Nation Ford Falcons 32-24 in the first round of the 5A playoffs in Columbia.

DQ Smith ran for four touchdowns and the Vikings came up with a late defensive stand to earn the victory.

Smith was 12-of-19 passing for 119 yards and also rushed 20 times for 175 yards. The senior’s fourth touchdown run, a 1-yarder, put the Vikings up 26-17 with 32 seconds left in the third quarter. But Nation Ford rallied behind the arm of quarterback Carson Black. The junior hit Donaven Pittman on a touchdown pass to cut Spring Valley’s lead to 26-24 with 9:32 left.

Spring Valley scored on its next possession. After big runs by KJ Jefferson, Evan Javis scored on a 21-yard TD run to make it 32-24.. But after a celebration penalty moved the conversion back, the Vikings failed to convert. Nation Ford drove to the Spring Valley 26 late in the fourth period, but Black was incomplete on his fourth down attempt. Black was 17-of-32 for 300 yards and three touchdowns.

The Falcons ended the season with a record of 4-6.

Chester 42, Belton Honea-Path 28

The Chester Cyclones topped the Belton-Honea Path Bears 42-28 in the opening round of the 3A playoffs in Chester.

Chester quarterback Zan Dunham led the way. He scored three touchdowns and rushed for more than 200 yards on the night.

The Cycs led 7-0 after one quarter and 28-14 at halftime. They made it 35-14 midway through the third stanza, but the Bears countered to cut it to 35-21.

The Cyclones improved to 7-3 overall with the win. They will play at Chapman next week in the second round of play.

Catawba Ridge 28, Westwood 20

The Catawba Ridge Copperheads edged the Westwood Redhawks 28-20 in the first round of the 4A playoffs at Blythewood.

The Copperheads led 7-0 after one period, thanks to a quarterback Jadyn Davis-Trevor Testerman touchdown connection, but Westwood rallied for an 8-7 lead early in the second quarter. When halftime rolled around the score was tied it at 14-14 — the other Catawba RIdge touchdown via a short Tyler Jones run.

Then Davis and Jones connected on a 40-yard touchdown pass to give Catawba Ridge a 21-14 lead after three periods. A Westwood touchdown but a failed PAT let the Copperheads maintain a 21-20 advantage, and then (who else?) Jones ran in a score from 12 yards out to push the score to 28-20 with 5:53 left to play in the game. And the Copperheads held on from there.

Catawba Ridge improved to 6-4 with the victory. The team from Fort Mill will travel to Greenwood for the second round next week.

Ridge View 46, Clover 14

The Ridge View Blazers defeated the Clover Blue Eagles 46-14 in the first round of the 5A playoffs at Clover.

The Blazers took a 23-0 lead after one quarter and coasted from there for victory. At intermission they were in front 33-7.

The Blue Eagles finished the season with a record of 4-5.

Gaffney 41, Rock Hill 0

The Gaffney Indians took a 21-0 lead after one period and defeated the Rock Hill Bearcats 41-0 in the opening round of the 5A playoffs at Gaffney.

The Indians led 27-0 at halftime and completed the scoring with 14 points in the third period.

Rock Hill ends its season with an overall record of 2-7.

South Pointe 42, Richland Northeast 12

The South Pointe Stallions took a 21-0 lead after one period and routed the Richland Northeast Cavaliers 42-12 in the first round of the 4A playoffs at South Pointe.

The Stallions added two more scores for a 35-0 lead at halftime. They closed out their scoring with a third quarter touchdown before the Cavaliers added two scores in the fourth quarter.

South Pointe improved to 8-1 overall with the victory. They will host Laurens in the second round next Friday.

AC Flora 34, Indian Land 10

The AC Flora Falcons came from behind in the second half and knocked off the Indian Land Warriors 34-10 in the first round of the 4A playoffs in Columbia.

The Warriors led 10-6 at halftime, but the Falcons regrouped and took a 20-10 advantage after three quarters. They added two more touchdowns in the fourth period to complete the scoring.

Indian Land ends its season with a record of 6-3.

Saluda 38, Andrew Jackson 14

The Saluda Tigers defeated the Andrew Jackson Volunteers 38-14 in the first round of the 2A playoffs in Saluda.

The Tigers led 14-0 after one quarter and upped it to 24-0 at halftime. Both teams scored twice in the third period to the complete the scoring.

The Volunteers completed the season with a record of 6-4.

Great Falls 28, Dixie 21

The Great Falls Red Devils toppled the Dixie Hornets 28-21 in the opening round of the 1A playoffs at Due West.

The Red Devils led 22-7 at halftime and upped the count to 28-7 after three quarters. Dixie scored twice in the fourth period to cut the deficit to 28-21, but Great Falls hung on down the stretch for the victory.

The victory improved Great Falls to 7-3 on the year. They will play at Ridge Spring-Moneta in the second round next week.
