The Herald’s Nov. 12 scoreboard: Chester sees big comeback; Catawba Ridge ends season; more

Friday night scores: Northwestern, South Pointe, Catawba Ridge, Chester

Northwestern 42, Byrnes 3

South Pointe 47, Laurens 20

Greenwood 42, Catawba Ridge 30

The Greenwood Eagles used a solid running game and defeated the Catawba Ridge Copperheads 42-30 in the second round of the 4A playoffs at Greenwood.

The Copperheads led 3-0 after one period was in books, but Greenwood bounced back to take a 14-9 lead at halftime.

Lowndes Still put the Eagles up 7-3 with a six-yard run with 11:07 left until halftime. Vermareon Morton’s nine-yard touchdown run made it 14-3 with 1:25 remaining in the second period.

The Copperheads answered quickly. Jadyn Davis passed to Jacoby Henderson on a 62-yard play to cut the deficit to 14-9 with 31 seconds remaining until half.

Greenwood opened the scoring in the second half. They took the opening kickoff and marched 70 yards in seven play to make it 21-9 when Morton powered in from three yards out.

Following a Catawba Ridge punt, the Eagles added to their lead. Morton scampered in from 41 yards out, and it was 28-9 with 6:21 left in the third period. Greenwood opened the scoring in the final stanza when quarterback Daylan Rappley scored on a five-yard run for a 35-9 advantage with 11:34 left in the contest.

The Copperheads countered. Davis capped a long drive with a one-yard. run. He passed to Jairus Frank on the two-point conversion to cut the deficit to 35-17 with 8:47 to play.

Catawba Ridge forced a Greenwood punt, and seven plays later they were in the end zone again. Davis capped the march with a one-yard run to cut the lead to 35-23 with 5:15 remaining.

The Eagles went back their punishing ground game for its final score of the night. Morton capped a long drive with a four-yard run to make it 42-23 with 3:36 left in the contest.

The Copperheads refused to quit. They took the ensuing kickoff and drove for a score. Davis passed to Trevor Testerman on a two-yard play to make it 42-30 with less than a minute to play.

Greenwood improved to 11-1 on the year and will host the South Pointe Stallions next week in the third round. Catawba Ridge finished its season with a record of 6-5.

Chester 33, Chapman 28

The Chester Cyclones came from behind in the fourth quarter and toppled the Chapman Panthers 33-28 in the second round of the 3A playoffs at Inman.

The two teams battled to a 14-14 tie after one period. Quarterback Zan Dunham figured in both scores for Chester. His pass to Reggie Heath midway through the opening period tied the game at 7-7. His one-yard run with less than a minute to play in the first quarter knotted the count at 14-14.

Henry Glenn gave Chester its first lead of the night with a 30-yard field goal with 3:24 to play until halftime, but Chapman countered with a quick touchdown for a 21-17 lead at the break.

After a scoreless third quarter, Chapman took a 28-17 lead, but the Cyclones came back.

Dunham led the way with another scoring aerial as well as the clinching touchdown run. He hooked up with Heath on an 87-yard pass play to cut the deficit to 28-23 with 4:28 to play in the game. He passed to Andre Evans for the two-point conversion and it was 28-25.

Dunham finished his incredible night with a one-yard run on a fourth and goal play with 15 seconds left in the contest, and the two-point conversion completed the scoring.

Chester will travel to Powdersville next week in the third round of play.

The Cyclones improved to 8-3 with the victory. Chapman ended its season with a mark of 8-3.

Ridge Spring-Monetta 48, Great Falls 32

The Ridge Spring-Monetta Trojans turned in a strong third quarter and defeated the Great Falls Red Devils 48-32 in the second round of the 1A playoffs at Monetta.

The Trojans led 8-0 after one period and upped the count to 18-0 at intermission. They exploded for 30 points in the third stanza, and when it was over, they were in front 48-12. The Red Devils scored 20 points in the fourth period to account for the final score.

The Trojans improved to 9-2 with the win, while Great Falls ended its season with a record of 7-4.
