Northwestern High School receiver Elijah Caldwell commits to Big 12 power
Country roads have summoned home a football star from Rock Hill.
Northwestern High School senior receiver Elijah Caldwell has committed to join the West Virginia football program next year. He chose the Big 12 university in Morgantown over several other regional suitors — including Appalachian State, Charlotte, Coastal Carolina, Liberty, Duke and others.
Caldwell had a stellar junior season in 2021. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound junior led the team with 77 catches for 1,247 yards and 15 touchdowns, furnishing a deep threat in Northwestern’s balanced and explosive offense.
The WVU offer arrived in January, about a month after Northwestern’s season ended and after Caldwell had already accrued dozens of scholarship offers. Per 247Sports, Caldwell visited WVU on June 23 and his recruitment was spearheaded by WVU wide receivers coach Tony Washington.
“We are very happy for Elijah,” head coach Page Wofford told The Herald Friday afternoon. “He’s done good work on the field and in the classroom to put himself in a position to have choices. I think West Virginia is a good fit. Tony Washington has done a good job creating a positive relationship with Elijah. I am very excited to see what Elijah does on the field for Northwestern this year now that he has made his commitment.”
Caldwell is joining the 16th-best 2023 recruiting class in the country, which includes two other wide receivers — Tory Johnson Jr. from Virginia and Rodney Gallagher from Pennsylvania.
Caldwell isn’t the only Trojan who has made big moves this summer. Offensive lineman Jordan Knox committed to the Big 10’s Northwestern University in May.
