South Pointe’s Chris Smith could commit to Gamecocks Friday
USC remains the single Power 5 Conference offer for defensive back Chris Smith of South Pointe High School in Rock Hill and this Friday when he attends the Gamecocks' recruit pool bash he just might be ready to jump on that offer.
Smith said he is considering committing either on the visit or soon after.
'It depends on how the visit goes," Smith said. "If the visit is what I expect it to be, then yeah," adding he would put the percentage at 85 percent that he will commit. He said he's not really thinking about any other schools right now. "It's kind of close to home and it probably will be best for the family." Smith said his mother, brother and grandparents probably will join him on the visit.
Smith has not visited any schools this summer and has been involved with a lot of seven on seven events. He recently talked with Gamecock recruiter Steve Spurrier Jr. about his interest in him.
"He was basically telling me with my skill of play I can come up and play offense or defense because when I get the all in my hands I can turn a bad play to a good play," Smith said. "Basically he said I'm pretty much going to make sure I do some special teams, some offense and some defense."
On defense, the Gamecocks see Smith as a cornerback.
Last season he had 71 tackles with 5 interceptions and he scored two defensive touchdowns. And on offense he accounted for 600 all purpose yards, with 10 catches for 200 yards.
