High school football is finally here, though the first few days of practice won’t look any different than the June and July 7-on-7 tournaments.

Storylines abound, but those will be addressed in the coming weeks. Scrimmages begin on Aug. 6, preview features on each of the 12 teams in our area will begin Aug. 9, and The Herald’s high school football preview section comes out in the Aug. 20 paper. Actual games – the actual season – begin the following day, Friday, Aug. 21.

Until then, here’s the rules on high school football practices in South Carolina, and also the scrimmage schedules for the 12 schools in The Herald’s coverage area.

Practice timeline (mandated by SCHSL)

Days 1-2: three hours of practice time in helmets and shorts permitted

Days 3-4: three hours of practice time in helmet and shoulder pads; contact with shields, dummies and sleds permitted

Days 6-14: full contact practice in full gear permitted; scrimmaging against other schools permitted; no more than five total hours of practice allowed in a day (regarding two-a-days)
