York offense efficient again in rout of Irmo
The York Cougars scored three times in the first quarter and used both their quarterbacks to bury the Irmo Yellow Jackets 45-24 Friday night in York.
Cameron McKinney threw only three two incomplete passes in each half for York and Wally Wilmore was effective catching, running, and throwing the ball for the Cougars. Irmo quarterbacks Ronnie Jamison ran for 106 yards on 20 carries and caught four passes for 65 yards when he switched to receiver in the second half. Cameron Smith threw two second-half touchdowns as Irmo scored 14 fourth-quarter points after trailing 42-7. York led 28-7 at the half.
Turning point
York seized control from the outset by forcing a quick three-and-out on Irmo's first possession and then driving 51 yards in six plays on their own first possession to go up 7-0 with 8:24 left in the first quarter. Cameron McKinney hit Kamian McClain for the one-yard score.
Critical
Nick Sturgill picked off a Ronnie Jamison pass at the Irmo 49 on the Yellow Jackets' second possesion, just as it appeared they may move the ball a little. Sturgill returned the ball to the Irmo 31 and again the Cougars took six plays to find the end zone. Wally Wilmore came in to play quarterback on this drive and scored on a five-yard keeper on which he broke two tackles to make it 14-0 with 4:40 remaining in the quarter.
Star contributions
McKinney was 21-for-25 for 207 yards passing with a touchdown. Seven different players scored for York with six responsible for touchdowns. Kicker/punter Myles Prosser was 6-for-6 on extra points, kicked a 30-yard field goal, and had a 53-yard and 50-yard punt. Brandon Garvin rushed 14 times for 86 yards. Wally Wilmore had seven catches for 121 yards, completed both his pass attempts, and ran for two scores.
Overheard
York is able to use Wilmore in many different ways as long as McKinney continues to play well at quarterback.
"If we move Wally around, Cameron is much more valuable to us at quarterback," York coach Bobby Carroll said. "Our whole team has rallied around Cameron."
York goes to play Carroll's old team South Pointe next week.
"I was Strait Herron's coach and he does a good job with them. We look forward to playing them. We need to play good people."
On deck
York faces South Pointe on the road next Friday.
