High School Football

Video, capsules and region standings: previewing Week Three high school football

No. 9 Greenwood (1-1) No. 6 at Northwestern (2-1)

Last week: Greenwood lost to Dorman 24-10; Northwestern beat Irmo 59-0

Last meeting: Northwestern won 52-24 (2014)

Key players: GHS - Jr. QB Roshun Jackson, Soph. WR Sam Pinckney, Sr. LB Tre Washington, Sr. LB Tim Brown, Sr. K/P Sam Pierce. NHS - Jr. DB Ali Shockley, Sr. LB Da’chon Witherspoon, Jr. RB Jerry Howard, Sr. WR Grant Kirk.

Need to know: Northwestern has scored on all three of its game-opening possessions this season. If that happens again Friday at home against Greenwood - which has scored three offensive touchdowns in two games - it would seem the Trojans would be on path to victory. The Eagles have been well tested in their first two against Dutch Fork and Dorman, and have a good defense as usual. Not sure they could hang with the Trojans in a high-scoring affair, though.

No. 1 South Pointe (3-0) at No. 4 Vance (N.C.) (3-0)

Last week: South Pointe beat York 35-21; Vance beat George Washington (Va.) 28-7

Last meeting: Vance won 28-7 (2014)

Key players: SPHS - Soph. DE Eli Adams, Sr. C Maurice Davis, Sr. QB Greg Ruff, Sr. WR Quay Brown, Jr. RB Voshon St. Hill. ZVHS - Jr. QB Kingsley Ifedi, Sr. WR/DB Myles Dorn, Sr. RB Donnavan Spencer, Sr. LB Anthony Butler.

Need to know: Firstly, because the game is being played in Charlotte, kickoff is 7 p.m. Secondly, this game may have the most college prospects of any game involving a team from The Herald’s coverage area in 2015. Vance is loaded a year after reaching the 4A state semifinals in North Carolina, while South Pointe’s skill position talent has been well documented. The difference may be up front where Vance averages 260 pounds on the offensive line and about 245 on defense, considerably bigger than South Pointe in both areas.

Chester (1-2) at No. 10 York (2-1)

Last week: Chester lost to Rock Hill 37-19; York lost to South Pointe 35-21

Last meeting: York won 53-21 (2014)

Key players: CHS - Soph. WR John Erby, Sr. RB Quay Strong, Sr. OL Stanley Yarborough. YCHS - Sr. OL Ryan Enniss, Sr. DT Joe Gill, Jr. RB Paul Moore, Sr. WR Preston Robinson, Sr. LB Jamar Griffin.

Need to know: Chester led York early in the two teams’ 2014 meeting, before York scored on five of its six second half possessions to blow the game open. The Cyclones will need two excellent halves of football to hang with a Cougars team smarting from its loss to South Pointe last week. Chester again has an excellent quarterback - junior Malik Williams - but it will take more than that to beat a well-rounded York squad.

Rock Hill (1-2) at No. 5 Dorman (3-0)

Last week: Rock Hill beat Chester 37-19; Dorman beat Greenwood 24-10

Last meeting: Dorman won 35-14 (2014)

Key players: RHHS - Sr. DE Stephen Chesney, Jr. WR Kenny Agurs, Jr. LB Kendrick Hicks, Jr. RB Kadarius Baxter, Sr. OL Tyrik Anderson. DHS - Sr. QB Collin Hill, Sr. RB Shanard Bain, Sr. WR Diquan Green, Sr. LB Wesley Robinson, Sr. DB Rodney Landrum.

Need to know: Rock Hill has lost nine of 10 to Dorman, which might be the most consistent program in the state since Dave Gutshall took over in 1993. He’s had one losing season in those 22 years - the first, back in ‘93. The Cavaliers’ offense struggled a bit last week in a 24-10 win over Greenwood, film that should give Rock Hill’s talented defense ideas of how to slow down Colorado State-bound QB Collin Hill. The Bearcats need another balanced offensive effort like last week’s against Chester, too.

Lancaster (2-0) at Central (0-2)

Last week: Lancaster beat Richland Northeast 35-14; Central lost to Forest Hills (N.C.) 21-7

Last meeting: Lancaster won 26-7 (2014)

Key players: LHS - Sr. QB Darius Robinson, Sr. WR James Killian, Jr. DB C’Darius Catoe, Jr. LB Desmond Ricks. CHS - Jr. OL Wesley Smith, Sr. RB Dedric Robinson.

Need to know: Lancaster had over 200 yards rushing twice in 12 games last season, but already has gone over 290 in both games in 2015. These Bruins are relishing the new focus on running the ball and should be able to keep that trend going against a Central team that is reloading after heavy graduation losses.

Indian Land (2-0) at Lewisville (0-3)

Last week: Indian Land beat Blacksburg 38-7; Lewisville lost to Chesterfield 49-32

Last meeting: Indian Land won 37-6 (2014)

Key players: ILHS - Sr. DB Richie Wilkinson, Jr. LB Ethan Burdette, Jr. RB Lee Massey, Sr. OL Jacob Williams. LHS - Jr. LB Darryl Manning, Jr. QB Trey Keels, Jr. ATH Mike Hill, Soph. DL Josh Belk.

Need to know: Indian Land hasn’t won back-to-back games against Lewisville since 1991, but the experienced and powerful Warriors stand a good chance of erasing that mark Friday. The Lions looked much better in a 17-point loss to Chesterfield, but will have to eliminate turnovers to stand a chance of keeping Indian Land’s ball and clock control offense on the sidelines.

Fort Mill (3-0) at River Bluff (2-1)

Last week: Fort Mill beat Greenville 35-33; River Bluff beat Columbia 49-0

Last meeting: River Bluff won 14-7 (2014)

Key players: FMHS - Sr. LB Evan Stankovits, Sr. P/K Taylor Sheets, Sr. DL Kaleb Cisco, Jr. WR/DB Ryan Deluca. RBHS - Sr. QB Brandon Tillmon, RB TiJuan Glenn, Sr. LB Armonti Hook, Soph. DB/LB Jalen Weston.

Need to know: Fort Mill has started 3-0 for the second year in a row for the first time since schools were desegregated. You’d have to go back to the 1962-63 seasons to find the last two consecutive Yellow Jacket teams that did that. Last year’s undefeated run was ended by River Bluff in a rainy mess of a game in which Fort Mill couldn’t hang on to the football. Unfortunately for Fort Mill, the forecast for Friday night is again wet.

Clover (1-2) at White Knoll (1-1)

Last week: Clover lost to Westwood 42-14; White Knoll was idle

Last meeting: White Knoll won 41-36 (2014)

Key players: CHS - Jr. RB/DB Sean Tyson, Jr. RB/DB Terion Hubert, Sr. OL Gavin Jenkins, Sr. DE Elijah Plummer. WKHS - Jr. RB Maurice Jones, Sr. QB Calev Grubbs.

Need to know: White Knoll - averaging 6.3 yards per carry and without a turnover through two games - presents a serious challenge to Clover Friday. The Blue Eagles need to get their rushing attack moving; they’ve mustered six explosive plays in three games, while surrendering 15 to opponents. Chad Smith’s team needs some big-gainers to light a spark under an offense averaging south of three yards per carry.

Andrew Jackson (0-2) at Great Falls (0-3)

Last week: Andrew Jackson lost to McBee 84-14; Great Falls lost to Buford 42-0

Last meeting: Great Falls won 46-14 (2014)

Key players: AJHS - Soph. DE/TE Dalton McKittrick, Sr. OL/DL Dylan Baker, Jr. WR Heath Gandy. GFHS - Sr. QB Pierce Funderburk, Sr. OL Tyrek Hoover.

Need to know: Andrew Jackson hasn’t won a game since beating rival Buford in the first round of the 2A playoffs in 2013 - a run of 12 games. If the Vols are to snap that streak, this might be the week to do it. Great Falls is struggling with depth and coping with the loss of four college-bound graduates. The Red Devils have scored just six points in three games and could be just what C.J. Frye needs to get his first career win as AJ’s coach.

Nation Ford (1-2) at Greenville (0-2)

Last week: Nation Ford beat Lugoff-Elgin 43-0; Greenville lost to Fort Mill 35-33

Last meeting: Nation Ford won 63-55 (2014)

Key players: NFHS - Sr. DE Charlie Newton, Soph. LB Vinnie Catan, Sr. WR Josh Shade, Sr. WR Jordan Helms. GHS - Jr. RB Jahmein Dendy, Sr. WR John Krall, Sr. QB Carson Spiers.

Need to know: The Falcons’ shutout of Lugoff-Elgin last week was the program’s first since the 2012 season opener. Nation Ford will be hard-pressed to repeat that feat against a high-powered Red Raiders offense, but it bodes well for Michael Allen’s team that its defense - with a sophomore leading tackler - appears to be moving in the right direction. Likewise for its offense, which racked up nearly 500 yards of offense last week, the Falcons’ best outing of the young season.
