Video: High school football preview for Week 6
No. 5 Northwestern (5-1) at No. 7 York (5-1)
Last week: Northwestern beat Fort Mill 56-6; York beat Rock Hill 31-12
Last meeting: Northwestern won 44-19 (2014)
Key players: NHS - Soph. OL Josiah Ivey, Sr. DE/WR Logan Rudolph, Sr. LB Dewayne Wilson, Sr. WR Julian Shockley, Jr. DB Ali Shockley. YCHS - Jr. DB Javione Matthews, Jr. QB Wally Wilmore, Jr. RB Tyquan McCray, Sr. WR Preston Robinson, Sr. OL Caleb Clayton.
Need to know: Northwestern has won 10 straight, so while these two teams don’t get along great, it hasn’t been much of a rivalry lately. York will lean on Wally Wilmore to make big plays at quarterback, but the Cougars will need their offensive line to step up against one of the best defensive lines in the state. The Trojans have 18 sacks and 30 tackles-for-loss this season, though corralling Wilmore will prove difficult.
Gaffney (2-4) at Rock Hill (1-5)
Last week: Gaffney lost to Nation Ford 42-26; Rock Hill lost to York 31-12
Last meeting: Gaffney won 31-14 (2014)
Key players: GHS - Sr. RB Ikeem Posey, Jr. QB Bryson Ward, WR Scott McCluney. RHHS - Sr. LB Khari Hunter, Sr. ATH Thailand Adams, Sr. RB Tim Sherer, Sr. DE Stephen Chesney.
Need to know: Gaffney has won five straight against Rock Hill, but the Indians are exactly rocking right now. Their struggles defending the pass were highlighted by Nation Ford last week, but it’s a stretch to think either team will have an easy time throwing the rock Friday night in almost certainly drenched conditions. Rock Hill had success running the ball in the rain against York with junior Kadarrius Baxter; Friday night may be the chance to test whether that was a fluke or something to lean on in region play.
Clover (1-4) at Fort Mill (4-2)
Last week: Clover was idle; Fort Mill lost to Northwestern 56-6
Last meeting: Fort Mill won 14-7 (2014)
Key players: CHS - Jr. FB Tanner Tolson, Jr. RB/DB Willy Clark, Sr. RB Tenchi Her, Jr. DE A.J. Pennington. FMHS - Sr. LB Evan Stankovits, Jr. DB/WR Ryan Deluca, Jr. ATH Ronnie Hughes, Sr. DL/OL Austin Randolph.
Need to know: Pretty even series- Fort Mill has a 30-21-3 advantage in the series since 1960, when the two teams played to a 0-0 tie. Ed Susi’s Yellow Jackets converted just 13 percent of their first downs last week against Northwestern and will have to do a better job of moving the chains against a ball-control Clover offense that is scoring just over 16 points per game in its three straight losses.
No. 1 McBee (5-0) at Lewisville (1-5)
Last week: McBee was idle; Lewisville lost to Lancaster 42-12
Last meeting: McBee won 63-19 (2014)
Key players: MHS - Jr. FB Alex Miller, Sr. RB Dashonnell Wright, Sr. RB Jordan Fair. LHS - Jr. ATH Mike Hill, Jr. LB Jene Thompson, Jr. LB Daryl Manning, Sr. WR James Peeler, Sr. DL Keilan Renegar.
Need to know: No .1-ranked McBee buzzes into Richburg on the back of a bye week. The top-ranked Panthers look very similar to last year’s juggernaut, if not a little better. Fair and Wright are a seemingly unstoppable duo and this will be - realistically - a very difficult game for Lewisville. McBee represents the Lions’ third straight undefeated opponent.
