Fort Mill runs through Clover in monsoon conditions
What’s a little rain among friends?
Clover came to Bob Jones Stadium Friday night as the two teams braved offshoots of Hurricane Joaquin sporadically blanketing the turf at the stadium with Fort Mill winning 46-30 over the Blue Eagles.
With the poor playing conditions, both teams stayed on the ground mostly, but it was Jackets’ quarterback Rogan Wells that was impressive throwing the ball in such poor conditions.
Defensively both teams made key stops at times, especially Fort Mill in the second half keeping the Blue Eagles from gaining to much momentum.
Fort Mill running back Brett Ferguson pounded his way through the Clover defensive line for the majority of the game carrying the Jackets and rushing for two touchdowns.
Turning point
After Clover scores, Fort Mill went 80 yards in less than 98 seconds as Wells hit Hunter Helms on a 32-yard touchdown to again extend the Jackets lead to two touchdowns right before the half. Fort Mill would constantly bounce between a one and two touchdown lead through the game. The back and fourth scoring stopped in the fourth quarter as the Jackets scored three touchdowns in 5:20 to swing things in their momentum for good.
Critical
Fort Mill’s defense stopped Clover turning the ball over on downs during the Blue Eagles’ first series in the fourth quarter. That gave the ball to the Jackets at the Clover 29-yard line. With the defensive stop, Fort Mill was able to take the ball and go the 29-yards as Ferguson ran the ball in from 19-yards out to extend the Jackets lead give Fort Mill a comfortable 39-22 lead.
Star contributions
Ferguson was the leading rusher for Fort Mill as he got 27 carries of the 223 yards for the Jackets. Wells was 11-14 for 176 yards passing the ball. Clover’s Cody Payne rushed for 125 yards and Willie Clark caught a 31-yard touchdown pass for the Blue Eagles.
