The York Cougars held off a second half rally from Fort Mill to get a 42-28 win as the Yellow Jackets gave up several big plays throughout the game leading to the Cougars victory.

Both teams came into the game with a 2-2 Region III record as the season nears the end, with each one looking to get ahead in the standings.

Fort Mill struggled to catch passes early on, as quarterback Rogan Wells hit his receivers, but they had trouble holding on to the ball.

Defensively, Fort Mill struggled to keep up with York’s fast-paced offense. On offense, with the Jackets struggling to catch the ball in the first half, York concentrated on stopping the run. Fort Mill was aided midway through the second quarter by several York penalties as they were able to get into the red zone for the first time in the game. That set up a three-yard pass from Wells to Hunter Helms for a touchdown.

Turning point

York opened the second quarter on the move as Brandon Garvin pounded the ball and traded carries off with quarterback Wally Wilmore to easily pace the Cougars. Wilmore would ran the ball in from 10-yards out to extend the York lead on a six-play scoring drive to make it 21-0.

Critical

York scored on its second series of the game leading already 7-0 as Wilmore hit Shandon Cobb for a 73-yard pass to deflate the Jackets’ hopes early on. York had been backed up on a couple plays because of penalties, but quickly recovered to score on what looked like a busted bubble screen.

After giving up a 97-yard kickoff return in the third quarter, Fort Mill was able to keep up with York by staying in the game as the Jackets used their ground game to move the ball. Brett Ferguson capped off a key drive with a 15-yard touchdown for the Jackets.

Star contributions

Wilmore passed for 169 yards and ran for another 101 yards to lead York. Garvin rushed for 172 yards on 20 carries. For Fort Mill, Wells passed for 221 yards and Ferguson rushed for 107 yards on 18 carries. Wells did hit Ryan Deluca for a 97-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter. Deluca caught three passes for 130 yards.
