Christ Church too much for Lewisville
Jeffrey Johnsen threw for three touchdowns and ran for another to lift Christ Church to a 35-13 victory over Lewisville in a Class A Division I first-round playoff game at Carson Stadium Friday night.
The second-seeded Cavaliers (9-2), who have won four consecutive state championships, will host No. 3 McBee in the second round next Friday night.
Christ Church began its second possession at the Lions' 37-yard line after Lewisville (3-8) was penalized for interference on a fair catch.
A short run and a sack moved the Cavaliers back to the 47, but on third-and-20, Jeffrey Johnsen hit Chase Poplin for 19 yards. On fourth-and-one, Radford Swent picked up the first down at the 27.
After an illegal procedure penalty put Christ Church in a second-and-long situation, Johnsen ran for 17 yards, giving CCES a first down at the Lewisville 15-yard line.
After a roughing the passer penalty moved the ball to the 7, Johnsen hit Swent out of the backfield for a 7-yard touchdown, giving Christ Church a 7-0 lead with 7:26 left in the first quarter.
On the first play of the second quarter, Lewisville's Trey Keels tried a quarterback sneak on fourth-and-one but came up short, and Christ Church took over at the Lions' 40-yard line.
Johnsen threw a couple of incomplete passes, but on third down, he hit Poplin for 20 yards and a first down at the Lewisville 20.
After a touchdown pass to Poplin was nullified by a penalty, Johnsen threw to Braxton Westfield out-jumped a defender for the ball at the 5 and then reached to get the ball into the end zone for a touchdown and a 14-0 Christ Church lead.
Late in the half, Keels threw to running back D.J. Robinson on the run out of the backfield, and Robinson turned it the play into a 35-yard touchdown, making it 14-7.
Midway through the third quarter, Westfield's punt return gave the Cavaliers the ball at the Lewisville 48-yard line.
It takes Christ Church seven plays to score. Johnsen's 19-yard pass to Lee Hudson takes the ball down to the 1, and Swent carries it in from there.
An interception by Daniel Dixon set up the Cavaliers' next score, a 13-yard pass from Johnsen to Donte' Anthony that made it 28-7 with 10:30 remaining.
Johnsen added a 1-yard touchdown run with 6:01 left to play for the Cavaliers.
Keels threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to James Peeler for Lewisville with 3:32 remaining, but the Lions’ two-point conversion attempt failed.
