South Pointe’s Derion Kendrick only played a few snaps in the Stallions’ five-game playoff run to a second straight 3A football state title.

But the 6-foot-1, 180-pound sophomore had done enough by that point to earn second team All-American status from MaxPreps. Kendrick was included in the web site’s sophomore team.

Kendrick had 77 tackles, three interceptions and broke up nine passes while playing safety. He was dangerous on offense too, running the ball 10 times for 151 yards and two touchdowns, catching 10 passes for 202 yards and five more scores, and even throwing a touchdown pass against Vance. And Kendrick returned two punts for touchdowns, the third phase of the game that he impacted this fall for the Stallions.

Kendrick was joined on the sophomore team by several other South Carolinians. State championship-winning quarterback Dakereon Joyner (Fort Dorchester) made first team offense, while Wilson’s Xavier Thomas made first team defense. Another Fort Dorchester player, linebacker Kenneth Brown, joined Kendrick on the second team defense. Joyner was named MaxPreps’ sophomore national player of the year after helping his team to a 4A Division I state title.

Northwestern’s Jamario Holley and Chester’s Pha’Leak Brown were named to MaxPreps’ Freshman All-America team last week.
