Tepper group exploring changes to Bank of America Stadium such as practice field, parking

The Carolina Panthers are keeping their options open when it comes to upgrading their team facilities.

Tepper Sports & Entertainment recently filed a rezoning administrative amendment application with the city of Charlotte to create the option of reworking the layout around Bank of America Stadium at 325 South Cedar St.

According to the application, the request was made to “provide the option for additional outdoor practice fields, relocate parking area from along Cedar Street to a location farther internal to the site, and accessory building(s) along the railroad/southeastern portion of the site.”

City staff is reviewing the application and has not yet made a recommendation about the plans, records show.

This rezoning application, if approved, could give the Panthers the ability to enhance or expand their practice facility beyond the outdoor fields and Atrium Health-sponsored practice bubble outside of Bank of America Stadium.

When asked for comment on the application, Tepper Sports & Entertainment gave the following statement to The Charlotte Observer Monday: “As we work through the strategic vision for our facilities, this is a step in the process that gives us options for what we may decide to do in the future. We expect more of these administrative processes as part of our due diligence.”

David Tepper, through Tepper Sports & Entertainment, owns and operates both the Panthers and Charlotte FC.

Last month, Charlotte FC opened a privately-financed training facility called Atrium Health Performance Park at 8600 McAlpine Park Drive in east Charlotte. At the opening, Tepper called it “a dream” to open the soccer facility.

The Panthers previously had an agreement with the city of Rock Hill to build a new team headquarters on a 240-acre property. The team terminated that agreement in April 2022.
