More than a dozen kayakers paddle the “paperclip” at the long bypass on the Catawba River in Great Falls, S.C. Special to The Herald

With the return of the whitewater on the Catawba River in Great Falls, S.C., experts and professionals have tips for paddlers navigating the long bypass channel.

Here are their recommendations:

• Always bring a team of experienced kayakers and canoers. Don’t go alone.

• Wear a life jacket.

• Wear helmet.

• Wear a wet suit, a dry suit and a light jacket during colder months.

• Wear appropriate foot wear.

• Only use kayaks and canoes specifically designed for whitewater.

• Let people know you are taking a trip down the river.

• Observe paddlers in the boater bypass, or the “paperclip,” before trying it out.

• Stay away from the main flow channel (the water is too turbulent).

• If you paddle the paperclip, have someone stand on the concrete area above the water with a rope to provide assistance.

• Check the flow schedule on Duke Energy’s website https://www.duke-energy.com/community/lakes/flow-releases.

• Paddle at your own risk — Duke Energy does not have lifeguards or staff on-site.

• Call 9-1-1 in case of emergency.
