Roy Williams’ interview was the 14th conducted for The Charlotte Observer’s new “Sports Legends of the Carolinas” series, which began in August 2022 and will soon conclude its first season.
All interviews were conducted in person and are available on CharlotteObserver.com and in podcast form wherever you get your podcasts. Here is a list of the 14 legends who have been interviewed so far by Observer columnist Scott Fowler and photographed by visual journalist Jeff Siner for the series, as well as the sport they are most known for in the Carolinas.

“Sports Legends of the Carolinas” is a series of extraordinary conversations with extraordinary sports icons who made their mark in North and South Carolina. Charlotte Observer sports columnist Scott Fowler hosts the interviews for the multimedia project, which includes a podcast, a series of online stories and video and photo components. McClatchy
Columnist Scott Fowler has written for The Charlotte Observer since 1994 and has earned 26 APSE awards for his sportswriting. He hosted The Observer’s podcast “Carruth,” which Sports Illustrated once named “Podcast of the Year.” Fowler also conceived and hosted the online series and podcast “Sports Legends of the Carolinas,” which featured 1-on-1 interviews with NC and SC sports icons and was turned into a book. He occasionally writes about non-sports subjects, such as the 5-part series “9/11/74,” which chronicled the forgotten plane crash of Eastern Air Lines Flight 212 in Charlotte on Sept. 11, 1974.Support my work with a digital subscription
