‘Sports Legends’ series continues in 2024 with a new set of icons, starting with Petty
When we started the “Sports Legends of the Carolinas” series in 2022, we weren’t sure what to expect. But as the world opened up again, we were anxious to close down our laptops and get out of our houses after COVID had mandated so many Zoom and telephone interviews. We hoped that we would find at least a dozen sports icons who would be willing to talk to us, in-depth and in person, for our new series.
Richard Petty marks our 34th “Sports Legends” interview. Thanks to legends like Steph Curry, Dawn Staley, Roy Williams, Mike Krzyzewski, Jeff Gordon, Chris Paul, Jake Delhomme, Steve Spurrier and many more over its first two years, the series continues into its third season in 2024, with many more surprise guests to come.
The first 33 interviews, along with exclusive photos of each legend by Observer visual journalist Jeff Siner, are collected in the “Sports Legends of the Carolinas” coffee-table book. Published in November 2023, the book sold out of its first printing, but additional copies have now been printed and are available at SportsLegendsBook.com. Signed copies are also available at Park Road Books in Charlotte and Main Street Books in Davidson.
Each interview becomes both a story in print and online, a video and a free podcast episode. Search “Sports Legends of the Carolinas” wherever you get your podcasts for the full conversation with Petty, as well as those with every other legend from the series.
New episodes and “Sports Legends” interviews will be published every 2-3 weeks throughout 2024.
