The driver of a tractor-trailer truck was able to escape a huge fire Monday before the vehicle burned on a busy stretch of highway just outside the city limits, fire officials said.

Rock Hill Fire Department officials responded to the incident in the 1110 block of Anderson Road, also called U.S. 21 Bypass, near Interstate 77 near the Quik Trip store. It was later determined that the fire was in York County jurisdiction, said Mark Simmons, Rock Hill Fire Department deputy chief.

The driver noticed smoke first then looked down through the floorboards and saw flames coming up into the cab and was able to stop and get to safety, Simmons said.

City firefighters found the cab of the truck engulfed with flames and were able to both put the fire out and keep the fire from spreading to the cargo portion of the trailer, Simmons said.

The York County Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause.
