Rock Hill neighbors shocked at stabbing death of woman, 25, in ‘quiet’ area

A 25-year-old woman was stabbed to death Monday night on Barrow Court in Rock Hill and a man was hospitalized with stab wounds, according to Rock Hill police.

The 26-year-old man was found at the scene with life-threatening injuries that appeared to be self-inflicted, police said.

Police said officers responded to a stabbing report at about 11:30 p.m. Monday. They found the woman dead at the scene “from what appeared to be multiple stab wounds,” Rock Hill police said.

The deceased woman was identified Tuesday as Marandy Jade (Moreno) Brandon by the York County Coroner’s Office.

The man was flown to Carolinas Medical Center with life-threatening injuries, police said. Information about his condition was not available Tuesday morning, police said.

The Rock Hill Police Department report says that officers were flagged down by several men who said a woman was being stabbed.

Police found a man in the bedroom of the house “holding a silver butcher knife, who was on his knees stabbing himself in the chest,” the report says.

Police told the man to drop the knife, but he kept stabbing himself, the report says.

Officers tased the man and handcuffed him, the report says.

Barrow Court neighbors said they were shocked by the incident, which police said they are investigating as a homicide.

Frances Hammers said she has only lived on Barrow Court for a little over a month.

“It’s quiet for the most part,” she said. “There’s a lot of kids that you see riding around a playing.”

Hammers said she was sleeping in her living room with her son when her husband woke her up and told her about the police cars and ambulance outside.

“Lights were going off, and more and more were coming,” she said.

Another neighbor, Jasmine Ashford, said there’s never been anything like this in the neighborhood before.

“It’s terrifying,” she said. “My grandmother’s been living in this house for over 30 years. It’s always been a quiet neighborhood.”

This is the fifth homicide in Rock Hill this year, police said.

This case is still open. No charges have been filed.
