A driver died Wednesday afternoon in a fiery crash in South Carolina near the North Carolina state line, officials said.

The wreck happened around 1:45 p.m. on a road between the York County town of Clover and Lake Wylie, southwest of Charlotte, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.

The area is just south of the North Carolina state line.

A 1989 pickup truck went off the road and flipped before catching fire, said highway patrol Master Trooper Brian Lee.

York County Sheriff’s Office deputies also responded to the crash scene and assisted, said Cpl. Johnathan Gilbert, spokesman for the sheriff’s office.

The identity of the person who was killed has not yet been released by the York County Coroner’s Office.

The crash remains under investigation by the S.C. Department of Public Safety and the coroner’s office.

The fatality is the 21st on York County roads in 2022, public safety department statistics show.
