3 dead, others hurt in separate Chester crashes over weekend, troopers say
Three people died and others were hurt in unrelated crashes over the weekend in one South Carolina county, officials said.
Two of the collisions in Chester County happened on Interstate 77, and the third was on Pinckney Road, according to Cpl. David Jones of the S.C. Highway Patrol.
The Chester County Coroner’s Office responded to the incidents but has not yet released the names of the persons who were killed.
In a Saturday morning crash around 12:10 a.m. on I-77 northbound, the driver of a pickup truck died when the vehicle hit trees after crossing the highway median, Jones said.
The second crash happened Saturday morning around 1:20 a.m. on Pinckney Road, Jones said. A passenger in an SUV was killed and the driver was hurt, Jones said. The SUV went off the road, hit a tree, and caught fire, Jones said.
The third collision was Sunday around 2:20 a.m. on I-77 southbound near the 66 mile marker, south of the York County line. Three vehicles were involved in that crash, Jones said.
A passenger in a sedan died and the driver was hurt in a collision with a Jeep, Jones said. A third vehicle then struck the sedan, Jones said. The conditions of the persons in the second and third vehicles remains unclear.
The interstate southbound lanes were blocked for several hours Sunday morning before the wreck was cleared, according to troopers and Richburg Fire-Rescue.
All three collisions remain under investigation by the S.C. Department of Public Safety and the coroner’s office.
